Forum: "It won't matter 5 years from now...".
Aloha Kasey,

I have heard this expression before in this context- "If it won't matter 5 years from now then don't spend more than 5 minutes on it now." I like this expression because it does help to put things in perspective for me. I think it has a strong and positive message and attempts to alleviate the stress of now. We tend to make everything so important and dramatic when really when we step back and look at the bigger picture much of what matters so much to us in the big scheme of things matters very little. I find comfort in this phrase and actually this forum has reminded me of the importance this saying has for me and is helping me destress as I write this. Sometimes I find myself stressing over little things or starting to freak out of stuff but in actuality those things really aren't worth more than 5 minutes of my time. This expression also reminds me how precious time is and that time is so valuable and not worth wasting.

Forum: Christmas list & the hardest person to shop for?
Aloha Christi,

Like you said about your Grandmother everyone on my list is hard to shop for because they all have everything they need and then some. I really don't give many gifts but if I find something that I think my mom or dad needs or would want I will get it for them. Sometimes I just give the gift of my time and love which is all we really need since we have everything else. I too love gift cards because then you can get whatever you want and use it when it will benefit you most. I do like personal gifts so when I find something perfect for someone I will get it and give it for a birthday or Christmas. This year I did get my mom and dad a present. I found them each something I thought would be useful, thoughtful and that they didn't already have a million of them. My mom loves jewelry but I find it hard to pick it out myself because she is somewhat specific so I stray away from that unless I am positive she will love it! My dad is difficult because like I said he has everything he needs and is always ordering stuff so I have to figure out something that would be useful but maybe he has not thought of yet lol.

Forum: Christmas isn't always the best time of the year!
Christi,

I have to say I really love this post! It is very thoughtful and well-written. It is true that the holidays can be an extremely stressful time for some people and for families as well. It can be a financial burden for many. I was thinking about this when I purchased a Christmas tree. Wondering how families who are already financially strapped could afford even a Christmas tree. They are very expensive! I personally don't make too big a deal out of Christmas. It's a time where I can be off work, travel and enjoy the company of friends and family. I don't stress myself over getting a gift for everyone instead I prefer to think of my time as a gift and look to spend quality time with others.

Also working at a school I wonder how many families are stressed over Christmas. While this holiday season can be a joyful time for many kids as you mentioned others are hungry and/or lonely without the support of the school day.

I've never felt like I want to skip the holiday season I just don't put pressure on myself to make this time of the year that different then other times. I may get a gift or two and this year I actually got a Christmas tree for the first time in over a decade but all in all I like to keep things low key and focus on traveling. I'll have a little get together with friends which is really a present to them and me and forget spending money on presents just to get someone a gift. My friends and family really have everything they need and more so it's spending time together that means the most.

Forum: My sick baby cockatiel, named "Smalls"
Aloha Slynch,

Awwwww that's so sweet that you are taking such good care of a little animal. I used to have a cockatiel a long time ago and then had a couple parakeets. Birds are fun pets. You are really kind to take care of that cockatiel and it doesn't sound like an easy job. Birds can seem like such fragile animals especially in your case. Have you searched on the internet for any suggestions?

I found this info which may or my not be useful:

Put a shallow bowl filled with room-temperature water inside of her cage to give her the opportunity for a daily bathe. A cockatiel needs the moisture to keep her skin healthy. Although she may not hop into the water right away, keep offering her the opportunity. In the meantime, until she gets the idea, use a water bottle to spray light mists on her feathers.

Do a few internet searches and you may find some helpful info. Sorry I am not more helpful as I am not well-versed in bird care but I find your attempt to take care of this baby bird very endearing. I hope she gets stronger and healthier and you are able to reunite her with the other birds. Good luck!

Forum: How do you spend your downtime?
Aloha,

It's wonderful to have a life that affords a decent amount of downtime for me to enjoy. In my downtime I like to read, journal/write, text and message on my phone, run, go to the movies, spend time with friends, lounge in my hammock at the beach, and spend time at the beach in general. I also like to hike and spend time in nature when I get a chance in my free time. Relaxing and kind of doing nothing is also important when it comes to downtime. I prefer not to watch tv in my free time but every now and then I will watch the Daily Show or Last Week Tonight. It's important to be productive but we have to realize as humans we need time to destress and just be. I also meditate in my free time.

Aloha Kiahna,

If I could change one thing right now I would make it so that we have three day weekends every weekend! I think society and all people would be better off with a better work life balance. If we had just one more day off we could spend more time enjoying time with loved ones and working on ourselves to be better people. Humans need more time for self-care and leisure activities. Life is meant to be enjoyed rather than being a rat race, each of us on our own wheels trying to earn money as fast as we can. We should get more time to just be and enjoy all the beauty that life has to offer. Parents could spend more quality time with their kids, we could develop more hobbies and even be more productive on work days by having one more day to ourselves.

Aloha Thankful,

I would like to thank my mother for booking us an amazing trip to Taiwan and Thailand this December. I haven't seen my mother since January and have really missed seeing her this year. I truly love my mom and I love our trips together as well. I am very excited for this trip and will be wonderful to see my mom again. We will have a blast and will be quite the trip of a lifetime. My mother works very hard and has a stressful job and I know she misses me a lot. I love talking to my mom on the phone and making her laugh but there is nothing better than spending quality time in person together. I'm very much looking forward to this time together.

Aloha Thankful,

I am looking forward to the weekend! I always look forward to the weekend. Who doesn’t love free time to spend with friend sand doing fun stuff? This weekend should be fun as I have some new friends to spend time with. I really value spending time with friends and enjoying the island. It sure beats sitting inside in an office all day. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job but nothing beats free time for adventuring with friends!!

I’m not looking forward to a simulation lab I have to go to for work on Monday. In fact, I have been dreading it ever since I saw it on the schedule. I am really worried that I will mess up or do something to look stupid in front of my co-workers. Something about it just makes me really uneasy. I will be so happy when it is over with. It says training so I’m hoping it is just that that we are getting trained on procedures and not being thrown into scenarios. Fingers crossed that it goes well!

Thanks for the forum!

Forum: Never Enough Time
Aloha Gabriella,

Time, such an interesting concept. I do feel like I have enough time in the day most of the time. I sure wish I had one more weekend day so more time to enjoy the weekend but otherwise right now I am pretty ok with how much time I have. For me it’s having the energy to match that time so that I stay productive and use my time wisely. The key for me seems to be getting up early every day to make the most of my hours. Currently I am really pushing myself to maintain my morning routine so I start my day off with a relaxed but productive tone. Having time in the morning to get my day started with meditation and jumping on CollegeNet seems to set a perfect tone to my days and hours. I have time to carve out for studying it’s just a matter of using it for that purpose. I’m not a tv watcher so I don’t spend time on that which I think helps keep me focused on my other activities.

I never thought of calculating hours in a week like Song does but I find that extremely fascinating. It’s interesting to sit back and take stalk of what exactly you do with your time and see where you might want to make adjustments. Working 40 hours a week the majority of my time is spent working so it’s a matter of dividing up the rest of the time between productive pursuits and relaxing/self-care and time with friends. It’s all a balancing act and we are each tasked with how to best navigate spending our time.

Great forum!

Forum: October is coming!
Aloha Savann,

Yes, wow! October is right around the corner. It’s hard to believe we are getting so close to the end of the year! Man this year sure flew by.

I’m hoping to get some serious studying done. Like A LOT. Like a TON! My test is November 3rd so October is my month to study so I can ace this exam! I want to study every day and then some lol. I have all the resources I need I just need to take the time to study and study well. I really want to pass this test and I need that desire to propel me into some serious studying.

I’m looking forward to my fall break from October 8-12 which I plan to do some serious studying. Like all day study sessions is what I see in my future during that week. I need to put other things aside and really focus focus focus! So my theme for October is FOCUS. I need to find that still point within myself where I can truly relax into focused attention on this one goal that I want to achieve. I will feel soooooo relieved when I pass this test. It will take 6 weeks to get the results back but I hope my studying will be so great that I can be confident that I passed while awaiting the final word.
