Subject: Is Religion Just An Excuse?

Forum: Is Religion Just An Excuse?
I recently had a conversation with my family members about how people refuse medical treatment because of their religious beliefs. Upon some research, we discovered that 48 states, including my own, allow religious exemption from receiving medical services.

This concept of “religious exemption” ignited my thoughts about religion in general and how it is often used to excuse our actions or influence our views and life choices.

Why do we accept religion as an excuse to enact prejudices, commit vile acts, dissuade educational facts, and refuse medical care?

How have your religious beliefs or lack thereof influenced your life?

How do you define your morality? Is it based on religious, personal, philosophical, or scientific beliefs?

Does religion perpetuate criminal behavior?

Would our views and life choices be any different without religion present?

Feel free to go beyond the questions asked... Looking forward to your responses!

Subject: What's A Common Theme In Your Life?

Forum: What's A Common Theme In Your Life?
Hey everyone! I am returning from a fairly long break. I did not mean for it to go on as long as it did, but I am back nonetheless.

I have been analyzing different forms of literature as a requirement for one of my summer classes and have noticed a lot of them have similar themes dealing with various emotions and life situations. For example, "don't believe everything you see or hear" or "don't mistake lust for love" or "insecurities are deceiving, don't let them get the best of you", etc.

So, I was wondering...

What are some common themes in your life and how have they influenced your life choices or current views?

Is there a particular song, book, or movie that resembles your life, current feelings or situation?

Looking forward to your responses!

Subject: What Are You Doing After Graduation?

Forum: What Are You Doing After Graduation?
Graduation for high school and college students is fast approaching. I will be graduating at the end of the summer and still have no idea what I will do afterwards. When it is all said and done, where does that leave us?

What do you want to achieve after you graduate?

Are you going to throw a party or travel the world?

Will you be searching for jobs or interning somewhere?

If you can't find a job in your desired field after graduation, would you settle for a job elsewhere?

I look forward to reading your responses!

Subject: Is Watching TV Good For You?

Forum: Is Watching TV Good For You?
According to this article, "Watching television often gets a bad rap. Studies have said that watching too much TV leads to obesity and greediness...but other studies have also (conveniently enough) found that watching television is actually good for us."

This article states that watching television can...
1. Improve your self-control.
2. Better your sex life
3. Enhance your creativity
4. Relieve stress
5.Make you more forgiving
6. Educate you on sex

How has TV impacted your life?

What have you gained or lost from watching television shows, movies, etc?

Forum: What Motivates You?
Hey cnet!

It has been a while since I have participated on here, but I am planning on staying for longer this time!

It has taken me a little while to really motivate myself to start competing again, but I finally feel motivated enough to do so. This got me wondering what motivates you in life.

What motivates you to continue cnet, work, school, etc?

Subject: What Scares You About Your Profession?

Forum: What Scares You About Your Profession?
As I was searching through a couple news articles, I found some dealing with kids aged 9 to 10 years old who poisoned their teacher. I realize that this is a rare occurrence, but it got me thinking about all of the numerous dangerous situations I could possibly be exposed to when I become a teacher.

What scares you about your profession or future profession?

Are you ever worried that you might come across a situation that you may not be able to handle?

Would you be prepared for a possible dangerous situation while at work?

Subject: How does technology make you feel?

Forum: How does technology make you feel?
So, I was talking to my dad today about how classes got cancelled for tomorrow due to heavy snow, and he said how it was a good thing because then I did not have to do all my work due that day. Though, he obviously forgot about this magical thing called the computer where I have to turn in everything electronically even though I will not be attending any classes. This made me wish that I could go back to the days where assignments could only be turned in in-person.

So, in that moment I was slightly disappointed because of technology, and this got me thinking how much technology affects our emotions.

Have there been any instances where technology has made you angry, happy, sad, etc?

How much does technology impact your life?

Has your use of technology changed over time?

Subject: Would you lend money to a family member?

Forum: Would you lend money to a family member?
I saw the movie Our Idiot Brother last night and it brought up the question as to how far one would go to help out a family member in need.

Would you ever lend money to a family member or friend?
If so, on what conditions?

Would you ever let your parents or siblings move in with you?

How far would you go to help out a family member or friend?

Any other thoughts are welcome...

Happy Holidays! :)

Subject: Will Hazing Ever End?

Forum: Will Hazing Ever End?
My dad told me a story today about how his old fraternity got kicked off campus due to psychological torture since they made the pledges watch paint until it dried and do absolutely nothing else for that amount of time. Also at my college we have had a couple fraternities kicked off due to hazing and other actions.

I have never understood the point of hazing people to belong into a group that is supposed to have a good reputation. Hazing is defined as "any activity expected of someone joining a group (or to maintain full status in a group) that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person's willingness to participate."

For those of you who have participated in Greek life, what was your experience?

For those of you who haven't, has anything happened at your college before that poorly represented Greek life?

Has anyone ever been involved in hazing as either the victim or the perpetrator; or known someone who has?

Is there a reason to continue on with hazing?

Other thoughts are encouraged...

Subject: Why Do People Pray?

Forum: Why Do People Pray?
I recently read something where someone said that " Prayer isn't always about who you believe in or even that you believe. It is a moment when you admit a desire in the midst of helplessness."

I never thought of prayer this way and I completely agree with him. Because even though I am Atheist I often pray, not to a higher power, but just out in the open.

Do you pray only because of your religion?

What does prayer mean to you?

Does praying accomplish anything?

Any other thoughts are welcomed...
