Hi Everyone!

What language do you wish you could speak?

I wish I could speak Russian because it sounds so cool and anyone who speaks it sounds really intense.

Hope you have a good day,

Hi!

I usually also just scroll through social media. I don't get a lot of breaks during the day. When I have a long break I sometimes try to get some personal things done so when I get home I can relax without having to worry about some errands and tasks I have to do.

Thanks for the question,

Hi,

I only really read the news online. I wish I was more knowledgeable about what's going on but I never seem to find the time to sit and get into it. the internet may be much less reliable than a newspaper but it's more accessible.

Have a good day!

HI!

I sneak food into the theater all the time. It's crazy that candy could cost so much there. There is a grocery store right next to the theater where I live so its super easy to go buy something there and put it in your purse/bag.

Forum: Easy lunch meal plans... suggestions?
Hi CNet!

Do any of you have easy meals you can make? I am finding myself back in a position where I have to pack my lunch for the day in the morning. I am out of ideas. I am pretty sick of sandwiches and granola bars. what is something quick that you can pack up and eat cold a couple of hours later?

Thanks in advance,

Hi everyone,

Share something positive that happened today.

I am working as a teacher's assistant in a third grade and today we did a "kindness circle". The teachers had been noticing that there has been a lot of teasing going on between students and we decided to do an activity that would allow us to focus on each other's strengths. Basically, the kids took turns sitting in the middle of the circle and we went around and said positive things about them. They really enjoyed it and were able to come up with some really awesome things about every single one of their classmates. After that we had recess and it was really good to see how they interacted with each other. I saw some kids that never play together hang out and not a single person came to me complaining that someone was being mean. Overall a very uplifting day!

Forum: Should We Let Food Stamps Be Used for Junk Food?
Hello!

This is a very tough and complex issue. People who have a low annual income which qualifies them for food stamps tend to be, like Tanya, lacking in an education about nutrition.

I work full time as an AmeriCorps Member in an elementary school in a low socio-economic neighborhood. Every day I am shocked at the things my students bring for snack and lunch. They usually have Takis, Doritos, cheese puffs, and Oreos and something very similar for lunch. We have a "healthy snack" option every day which is fruit or a vegetable but they never eat it claiming that they don't like it. I was working with one girl, trying to get her to eat a banana or apple for breakfast instead of the usual unhealthy snack she eats on the way to school. I was only able to get her to eat it if she put Nutella on it.

Most of these kids' families aren't around enough to even know what they eat. My students eat Mac n cheese or pizza for dinner every day because they could just stick it in the microwave since their parents usually have a night shift they have to get to at dinner time. I know that this is not true of all food stamp users but it is the lack of education and motivation to a healthy lifestyle that causes them to buy junk food. It is an easy fix for someone who has no time or reason to put in the effort to cook a good meal.

Since I am serving with AmeriCorps, I do not get a salary or hourly pay. We receive a stipend which is low enough so that many of us qualify for food stamps. My peers come from an educated background and usually spend their food stamps at the farmer's market where they get high-quality food.

While it may sound frustrating to know that your taxes are going to someone's junk food craving, it is important to remember that they are doing it not out of indifference to your hard earned money, but because it is cheaper, easier to acquire, and often they are unaware of the damage the food is doing to their health.

To answer your question, I don't think this issue could be resolved by simply banning the use of food stamps on junk food. We need better access to healthy food and more education on what a healthy meal looks like and what unhealthy food can do to your body.

Thanks for the well thought out question,

Hi Farah!

I think they should only be used once students get into pre-algebra. Students need to be able to do the simple operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) on their own and see the why behind their answers. By the time they start pre-algebra they should know all of their math facts and be comfortable finding the answer on their own.

Morning everyone!

Are you expecting to receive a scholarship this week? I think I will (hopefully) receive an open award.

How many have you won so far?

Good Luck!
