    Drunken Disney

I have two kids ages 3 and 5, which means watching a lot of Disney movies. I was so excited when my daughter was old enough to watch all my old favorites, but I've been shocked at how much smoking and drinking is present in the movies. I never noticed as a kid, but now as an adult and and parent, it's been hard to ignore.

So think of your favorite Disney movie (or if someone already mentioned it, choose another) and think about whether there was any smoking or drinking.

Also, answer the following question: Does it matter?

    Re: Drunken Disney

My favorite Disney movie is Cinderella and there IS smoking. When the duke comes to tell the king that the prince found a girl he likes, the king gets out a pile of cigars, sticks a bunch in the duke's mouth, and light them up.

So does it matter? Well, I never really noticed or thought about the cigars as a kid and I certainly never thought about going out and smoking them. As a parent, I'd prefer that they not be there, but I'm not concerned enough to say that my kids shouldn't watch the movies.

    Re: Drunken Disney

My favorite Disney movie is, and was as a child, The Lion King. Seeing as all of the characters are lions or other animals, there is no smoking. However, Walt Disney was a lifelong smoker who died of lung cancer at age 65. Chain smoking was common when he was alive, so that explains why it is in so many of his movies.

As for whether it matters, I think parents are far more sensitive to it than children are. Children see things differently. Depending on if their parents smoke or not, they may not even know what smoking characters are doing. When I was young, I was more focused on the story than the smoking. In fact, I too don't think I noticed it until I was older.

I'm gonna go with it doesn't matter. I grew up in a Disney house (dad has disney tattoos, I'm like LEGIT raised on disney) and we've been going to the parks once a year for family vacation since I was six, though not as an adult since I'm in college and all that. I did work for Disney World for a few years as well. I shall only say, I am the Disney authority, so meh!

As to the smoking and drinking and all that, despite my long eyars of exposure, I literally cannot think or remember a single time they smoked in a disney film. I know they did, i'm sure there was drinking, but it obviously made such a small impact that it may as well have been left out. Maybe there was some in alladin? I dunno. But kids, whether we like it or not, will see it in other shows, in real life, parents of their friends may smoke at a sleep over or in the park. Instead of sheilding anyone, and thus leaving them protected by their innocence, but set up to be just....naive, we should let them know about it all in a timely manner, as they grow, and let them make their own choices and experiences. Life is hard, the world is not always nice, and your kids are going to be harmed by it, over and over, just like you were. So get them ready for it, make them strong; protecting your children from what's out there only ensures they'll be mauled by it far worse later.

    Re: Drunken Disney

My favorite movie is Pinocchio. I think there is a scene where they are playing billiards while smoking and drinking. The drink actually turns his friend into a donkey if I remember correctly. I think in this instance Disney used this scene to illustrate the negative consequences of drinking and smoking.

I am like Tenken. I can remember smoking and drinking being a part of the Disney movies but I can't pinpoint exact scenes other than the one I mentioned above. It may have been so long since I have watched most of the Disney movies that I no longer remember or it could be that they did not leave a huge impression on me.

I don't think it is that big of a deal to have drinking and smoking in the Disney movies. It was a different time back then, but despite that I don't think drinking and smoking are glorified in Disney movies. They are never the theme of the story.

    Re: Drunken Disney

RoxxyS17: I think that Disney backed off from the smoking and drinking in more recent movies. In general, the fact that it's an animal-only movie doesn't mean that there won't be smoking and drinking though. I was just watching the Aristocats with my kids and there's a goose that is totally schloshed.

Tenken: You are like I was prior to having kids in that you don't really remember the drinking and smoking in Disney movies. I agree that kids will be exposed to smoking and drinking at some point and since a lot of the characters that engage in these activities are the bad guys, it's a good opportunity to talk about why you shouldn't do it. In fact, I noticed that in several of our DVD's that Disney made commercials about why you shouldn't smoke. 101 Dalmations and Pinoccio are two examples.

avillalp: Perfect! You can tell your kids if they smoke or drink they'll turn into jackasses!

    Re: Drunken Disney

I think you also have to consider the context in which these movies were made... most of more famous classic cartoons were made in 40s, 50s, and 60s when the dangers of smoking were not as prevalent of a concern.... as for the drinking, well I cannot say I have noticed it in most of the cartoons, but I watched Dumbo again recently and MAN. That movie is trippy. The elephant gets made fun of, drinks some liquor the circus folks lefts and magically can fly. Interesting...

I personally not a fan of Disney.... They don't give permission to copy most any of their material under fair use for educational purposes. Teacher have been sued by Disney for copying pages out a coloring book with Micky in it.... and the animation of their classics just sucked compared to contemporaries like Warner Brothers....

    Re: Drunken Disney

As a child , i never realized that some disney movies have content not ment for children. But as an adult, i watch disney movies with my sister and i realized that some disney movies have subliminal messages and has sexual gestures. Children today watch disney movies and dont think anything major about it. But if an adult were to watch it they would notice that disney movies have content that are not intended for children to watch and some disney movies have messages to children allowing them to think that certain acts are ''o.k''. forexample there are many disney movies that have girls as young as sixteen getting married to theyre so called prince charming. In todays society children are getting pregnant as young as sixteen.. When movies are made for children, they should also have content made for children.. NOT FOR ADULTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

    Re: Drunken Disney

Drinking and smoking does not even begin to describe the controversy Disney has created. There are many Disney subliminal messages, most of them are harmless to children though still immoral. Children are more focused on the story lines and not the little hints and gestures of inappropriateness. Yes it is true that Disney movies if you look carefully you can find many things that are very adult content. The proof is all on YouTube. Examples of that would be...
1 - The Lion King: if you pause the movie just right when Simba throws himself on the ground and pollen rises, you can see the word "Sex" spelled in the sky.
2- The Little Mermaid: When Prince Eric was under Ursala's spell and was about to marry her, if you look closely at the priest, he has an erection.
3- Aladdin: When Aladdin asks Jasmin to get on the carpet with him, if you listen closely he quickly says "Good kitty, take off your clothes"
I know these are all unbelievable, but there are many more. I have most of these movies and I could not believe it.
Even though children don't notice it, it doesn't make these ok.

    Re: Drunken Disney

Well if you never noticed then it's no big deal.
as kids we spend our movie time looking at the pretty color and te movements, we don't really follow story plots.
I know I have watched movies that I watched as a kid and I too say, oh wow I never noticed that.
But those are the best movies. Movies now a days are no good. Except for the new movie tangled i love that movie. and if you notice there is drinking in that movie too. I guess it makes the movie more realitic for everyone to love not just a child.
