    The Bert and Ernie Debate

So apparently there is this feud going on between Sesame Street and writer Mark Saltzman on the topic of characters Bert and Ernie. Saltzman claims that the characters are gay, while Sesame Street is claiming that no, they're not, they're just best friends, plus they're puppets for a children's show, so they have no sexual orientation.

What do you make of all of this? Do you think it would matter if the characters were gay or not? Let me know what you think, and good luck in the election!

Re: The Bert and Ernie Debate

I don't know why this has to even be a debate. My thought: so what if they're gay or not?! It's a kids show, and the age of the kids watching this show don't really understand gay vs straight. So to those kids, they are just characters on a show.

I'd like to know what the purpose of the writer revealing his intentions of Bert & Ernie. Was he hoping for increased ratings? Was there money involved? Was it just to get something off his mind? Why did he feel the need to share that he wrote the characters as being gay?

It seems almost like there was an internal feud between the writer and the producers, and this was his attempt at "sticking it to them."

Either way, if my daughter ever decides she wants to start paying attention to TV, this will not change my mind whether or not I allow her to watch this show.

I'm interested to see other's points of view on this! Thanks for reading :)

Re: The Bert and Ernie Debate

    Hi Savann,

I grew up watching Sesame Street and I love Bert and Ernie!!!

Honestly, when I was little, thought they were brothers! Then I thought they were best friends. They made me laugh and that is all I cared about at the time.

It makes me sad that the characters are being brought into the sexual debate. Who even cares? Not me! I love them still and always will ,,, whether the are brothers, best friends, roommates or husbands!!! Maybe they can be whatever the person watching them identifies with and needs them to be at that moment and time.

    Thanks for reading,

Really? Why does sex have to be a part of a kids show? I agree with Beth and Christi, who cares? The target audience (preschoolers) shouldn't know anything about that at all. Please let little kids be little kids!!!

I agree with Sesame Street that they are just puppets, why do they have to have a sexual orientation anyway?

Thanks for the forum, and have a good one!
