    Paying for tests?

    Hey everybody!

Do you think it's fair that college tests cost so much? I had to pay $205 today to take the GRE, which almost everybody who goes to grad school needs to take. And if I want to take it a second time, that's another $205 I have to spend. I get that they need to pay for their infatructure and labor, but $205 is absurd for an ONLINE TEST. I think it's ridiculous. How about you?

    All the best,
    Matt

    Re: Paying for tests?

I do think it is ridiculous that we have to pay so much for tests. It's hard not to see the testing companies as a business when you know they are making money off of training materials, courses, and the test itself. When I was a classroom teacher, standardized tests were the bane of my existence. Teaching to them was not why I became a teacher, but it always seemed to come back to these tests. I learned that not everyone is a good test taker, and that there are really specific things you can learn to outsmart a test and get the best score. It seems like standardized tests are less about testing one's capabilities, and more about testing one's familiarity with the format of that particular test. If you don't practice, you are less likely to get a good score. How can you practice without paying for expensive courses and materials? Also, are the people who made the test getting paid every-time someone purchases a test? Is the test proctor benefitting off this $205? If not, why? My teaching certifications were collectively $400, which seems ridiculous to get into a field that is not even lucrative. Overall, these tests are too expensive, but fit in with the theme of impossibly high rates for getting a higher education in the US.

Just my opinion (and some light ranting),
    Lauren

    Hey Matt!

I don't know why they cost so much, that seems pretty ridiculous.

    Have a good one!

    Re: Paying for tests?

I've also wondered how they justified the costs for such tests, including the online ones. It would be nice if they put into consideration the fact that a lot of college students could do with paying less or having a payment plan option, but I guess we'll never know why they charge so much.

    Re: Paying for tests?

    Hey Matt,

I do think that it's ridiculous to have to pay for a test like this. However, the biggest slap in the face was having to pay for my DIPLOMA after I finished graduate school. They don't hand them out anymore, you actually have to pay for it. For me to get my diploma (that I earned, and paid for I felt like with tuition costs) cost an extra $225. I got it because I thought I wanted to have it as a reminder that I graduated, but since I've gotten it, I always feel angry when I look at it that I had to spend $225 to receive it. It's insane that colleges charge what they do for just about everything!

    Thanks for the forum!

    Re: Paying for tests?

    Hey Matt,
I agree, it's ridiculous. What I think is ridiculous is that my degree is mostly in an online learning format. I have to pay an extra "distance learning fee." What?? Shouldn't it be cheaper since I am not physically using any of the school's resources? It's like an extra $200 per class!

I've also had to pay for various software programs for each class that we use maybe a few total times. Seems like such a waste to me.

    Thanks!
    Morgan

    Re: Paying for tests?

    Hey Hey!

Really do not have anything to add. School costs too much and its disgusting that students are taken advantage of by for profit test makers. I understand needing to make some profit, but the amount its at is ridiculous.

    Re: Paying for tests?

    Hey Matt!

I completely agree with you that the high prices surrounding tests are simply ridiculous! For many, there is a lot of money already being spent on test prep courses, college applications, etcetera. I know that I had to pay $60 or so for taking the SAT with essay this past March, and AP exams usually cost $94 or so to take per exam in the U.S. (fortunately, for people attending the school district I live in near Atlanta, the school pays for the exam prices so we don't have to). I personally think that putting such high price tags to such stressful, important academic tests is simply putting an additional barrier for one unlocking his/her potential via education. If these tests can't be free, at least slash the price of these tests significantly!

That's my thought on this issue; have a wonderful day :o)!

    Re: Paying for tests?

    Great forum,

I think it's really unfair how much an educated coast period not to mention a test. I couldn't agree with your post more.

    Re: Paying for tests?

The majority of the education system is taking all they can out of each one of us that utilizes it from the books to tests and the money goes to who knows where. I first saw the true price of textbooks and we tend to pay 200+ or more for the book when it cost only 10 to 25$ to make if that much. It is really sad, and I feel sentimental for teachers.

    Re: Paying for tests?

    Hello,
I believe these test for college are a rediculous amount of money. My major is nursing and there are so many test I have taken just to get admitted into the school. This drains my pockets because I have to score high on the test so it leads to testing 2 times. Eventually the test get easier because most are the same when you retake it.

    Thanks,Ladymo

    Re: Paying for tests?

Hi, no paying for tests after you have already paid a fortune for classes and books is ridiculous and a money racket. My brother had to pay money when he took a test online. Others have been taken online and you can answer them or send in assignments without paying more money. Enough killing us with fees and expenses.
