    Unwinding after a Stressful Day

    Hello everyone,

How do you unwind after a stressful day? Are there any tips or articles you would recommend?

While thinking about how to relax in generative ways, I came across this site, and this short article:

The article includes links to several scientific studies, but the main take-away seems to be that we need to mentally turn off the drive for more productivity/performance/etc., and give ourselves the time and space to relax.

This is helpful for me because I recognize myself in this article, and particularly after a long day at work, I find it can be difficult to shut work out and focus on something restorative. Here's to enabling myself to be "unproductive" and relax after work.

I love to sit in my hammock to de-stress after a long day.

I have a side porch and a back porch. On my side porch, I have two long hammocks that stretch from the side of my house to the porch railings. On the back porch, I have an incredibly comfortable hammock that looks a lot like a chair, so it doesn't stretch across the porch, it just hangs from the wooden planks above. Swaying back and forth in the hammock and reading a good book is one of my favorite things in the world, and it happens to be a great way to unwind.

In the winter, I like to go to the gym. I feel as though I can sleep much better at night if I've exercised. In the summer I'm constantly running around at the summer camp I work at, so I don't go to the gym quite as often. However, I make myself go in the winter because it's good for my body and it feels great after.

    Thanks for the forum!!

I usually stretch because I get really tense when I am stressed. I just lay on the floor and breath and stretch until all the stress of the day melts away!

This might sound counterintuitive but I go and kill myself at a really strenuous workout.
Not only do I feel so much better after a long grueling day, but I feel like I have more energy and more space within myself to relax enjoy a book or have dinner with friends. I am happier, and when I'm happy, I am relaxed.

    Hey Hey!

I turn on the TV and start arguing with whatever show is on. Right now I have a nightly shouting match with Steve Harvey on Family Feud. It centers me...with rage.

I actually don't really get to unwind after stressful days. I'd love to do a hard workout, go to the ocean, or have an exhausting fight to the death with a honey badger, but after my job I have more side-jobs. Student loans don't pay for themselves and while I'm glad to have the job I do it's not the kind of work I want to be doing so I'm trying to pave other roads in my profession.

Sooooo very little time to actually do things for me, and I have to say I'm feeling it.
