Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hi everyone,

Do you agree with me that College and Universities parking spaces be Free for students ? I mean we are already paying an arm and leg to attend our classes. Why can't they give us free parking ? Have a wonderful day.

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hi,

I absolutely believe that parking to attend schools should always be free for everyone. We are already paying a lot of money for tuition and many other fees, why should they charge us for parking? Schools are making a lot of money for parking and it’s business for them! A lot of students are taking loans, have difficulties to pay off the tuition fees, and they still charge for parking. My school’s parking cost $136 for 10 weeks quarter. It’s very expensive.

In my country, there are a lot of parking lots near all the schools and none of them charge money for it. American Universities are trying to make money from everything that they possibly can. It’s really unfair in my opinion. I never believed in paying money to park my car, especially in schools, but I have no other choice.

    Have a great day!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hello,

YES THEY SHOULD BE! I understand maybe certain places for teachers, certain for students in special programs, and handicap. There is no reason why they need to charge for parking amount the other 100 things that they want to charge for. Yes, we could ride our bike or grab the bus, but that doesn't always work with everyone's schedule. My husband and I have a house 30 miles outside of town. So my commute to school everyday is almost an hour- I certainly can not ride the bus or bike.

It's not like they aren't making enough money!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Good morning Televiacom,

I don't agree that they should necessarily be free, but that they should fall in line with the mission of the university: to deliver an environment conducive to learning. Albeit cheap by comparison to the other costs of attending higher education, it is one more barrier.

To answer your second question, it's not free because it doesn't have to be. As long as students drive to school, they will have an inelastic market to tap. I don't know about the transportation infrastructure in Houston, but if buses, trains, and biking are available, they are great alternatives. It's helped me spread out costs.

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hi Televiacom,

I agree, university parking spaces should be free. The university already takes too much of our money for uition and room and board and meal plans. This is almost like a criminal enterprise. This policy should be banned!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hello!

I definitely agree that parking should be free. Luckily at my small school parking is free for everyone, you just have to obtain a parking pass.

If you are paying for classes and especially if you are living on campus and already paying for dorms, you should not have to pay for a spot to park your car!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

I agree that the students should definitely not pay for parking at all no extra fees no nothing just free parking

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hey Emilie and all!

Wouldn't that be nice to have? A free parking space. My college has very limited parking space. Their grounds are very small, so they have an arrangement with the city to give students with college ID cards a free ride on the transit bus to school. I'm sure this cost is in my "incidental expenses" somewhere, but it is not specifically described there.

I do know that not only do we have to pay for our own parking space if we drive to school, but also for the instructor's parking spaces, their discounted lunch in the cafeteria, their instructor's textbooks and all supplies they need for class. The costs are proportioned per student. I am asking for an itemized list to see what else they slipped into our tuition fee because I was very surprised to hear all of this is in there.

My former college not only had paid for parking spaces, but time limits on being there. Two hours was the limit, regardless of a class being three hours long! They handed out $10 tickets right and left! I fought mine in court and won the reversal of the ticket. Also, the on campus speed limit was 5 miles per hour! Who can drive that? The judge threw that speeding ticket out, too - I was doing 15 mph. The legal minimum is 25 mph, so the judge followed the law, not the campus ridiculous restrictions. The campus counted on students not fighting this, which would then secure the court to enforce the fine because it was not argued. I fought the law and I won! LOL! They sure put ridiculous charges on our accounts.

I don't feel like I am getting a free bus ticket any longer.

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hey Televiacom,

Absolutely brilliant suggestion !!! I agree. As students we are already paying a lot of money and I am sure there is a portion of fees specifically categorized as Student welfare or Student life. Therefore its legit to ask for the free parking space.

Realistically speaking I believe most universities are not giving free parking space because of lack of land to build a parking lot or if they have land then they don't have lump sum money to build it. But I would still say, students deserve free parking or at least make the parking space available for a lesser fee (like 2-5 dollars or even 10 per sem/year).

    Thanks for the idea !!!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

I'm a commuter to my college as well so paying the parking fee has got to be one of the most ridiculous thing ever, especially on top of that loads of debts I'm already drowning in from trying to pay off tuition and other school expenses..
But at the same time I can kind of understand why they charge a parking fee for students, on the side of wanting to make more money and rip us off of course. I just feel like the parking lot might be really hard to manage if it was free. It's going to be difficult to keep track of the parkers in the lot, differentiating legit students that belong to that college versus random people on the street who are just looking for free parking spots XD. I'm sure with all the parking freeloaders flocking into the lot it would get crowded so quickly that students from that college won't even be find to find a rightful place to park at.
I don't know. I definitely suggest lowering the parking fees in half though, or kind of promote a way to tell which car belongs to a student versus random outsiders so that students can rightfully park at the college without so much worrying parking fees.

    Have a good one!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hey Emilie and all!

Man, it would be amazing if parking on campus were free! At my college, parking spaces are very expensive. It's like $500 or something crazy like that for a parking garage. And you can only park in one garage, not anywhere on campus! That is insane to me. Maybe if we were parking at the White House I would understand why it costs so much, but we're just trying to get to school! I think it might be because my school is doing so much construction lately and space is kind of tight, but man that is a rip off! Also, if you get caught parking without a permit, it's a $90 fee! It amazes me how much the school takes advantage of the students who are already paying thousands for tuition. That's one of the things that I can't stand about my school.

I understand paying for a bit of service since it did cost money to pave or make the garage, but I would think like $20 would be enough. Then a lot more students would get them and it would be paid off in no time! But alas, my school never does anything that makes sense haha!

    Have a wonderful day!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

YES! We pay enough in tuition and "fees" that we shouldn't have to pay just to have convenient access to class!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

Parking should be absolutely free for college students! From tuition, books and extra fees! Who wants to pay to park? Its's already stressful being in college having to pay for a million things. I mean they might as well pay to breathe on campus at if they're being charged for unnessacary stuff like parking. I thinks it's only fair to let students park for free and charge for parking for visitors at sporting events that's the only thing that is really reasonable and fair to me.

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    Hey Emilie!

I think that with how much we are paying for tuition parking should be free. It's as simple as that.

    Have a wonderful day!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

I believe they absolutely should be free, or at least heavily discounted for the student body who pays tuition to go there. It would be a lot easier on the students and one less thing for a college student to worry about having to pay is a good thing! I feel like the daunting costs of going to college alone is enough to scare a lot of our nation's youth away from attending school after high school; in addition to paying for a room, books, and all the individual class fees, you can really rack up immense debt by trying to further your education. Parking should be free for students who work extremely hard to pay to attend a college!

    Have a great day! :)

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

    hi hi!

Yes it should be free but unfortunately it's not always the case. My college is in the middle of city of Chicago. First floor of the building is the college and the rest of the building is Holiday In Hotel. There isn't even a parking garage for students. Students can park in the near by underground parking garage, and get some discount, but still I would pay $25 a day with a discount to park my car. I always took public transportation, which is easier and less expensive.

    Talk later!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

I agree with you!! You're already paying SOO much to attend classes and to even pay for the supplies for the classes, then you also have to pay parking? That's too much!!

Re: Should College/ University parking space be Free ?

I agree 100% that parking should be free. We go in debt so much and on top of that have to pay a huge fee for parking? I'm blessed that my college is $25/semester. But some colleges pay up to $300/semester.
