Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

The phrase "under God" discriminates to those who don't believe in God. It hasn't been in our pledge forever and we have freedom of religion in the constitution. Should we remove Under God from our pledge of allegiance? P.S I am not for or against... Just bringing up points

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

I personally do not think it should be removed. Yes, we have freedom of religion in our country but saying "one nation under God" is acceptable to so many religions. God can be that one diety or many that you worship, whether it be Buddha, Allah, Heavenly Father, etc.

There was actually a pole taken on this subject. 82% of people poled believe in God and do not want that part of the Pledge removed. Why are we catering to that other 18%? Doesn't majority rule in our country? We have gone way overboard with worrying about whether we are offending someone or not and we start to forget what is truly important.

The fact is, we ARE one nation under God. Is it so wrong to state it? And, is it so wrong to teach our children that there is a supreme being who loves them so much that he provides to them this beautiful country and all of the freedoms that they enjoy? I dare say "NO", it is not wrong. Pledge on!

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

Very good point. I think they should take it out. But it really dosen't bother me because nver have I ever pledge to the flag becuase of my beliefs. I remember getting in trouble at school for it all the time but never have i said that. Good point

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

    Yeah that is a really good point to bring up Chris but you always had good topics but Yeah I believe it to be offense to have that in the pledge and like loud said kids use to get in trouble if they didn't stand up and pledge to the flag.They would get the thrid degree and everything. Once again good point and hope to see some more of you. and congradulation=}

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

No! And Never! Taking god out takes away a unique part of our early culture. Sure some may not hold the same view. But the majority does, and our fore fathers had it placed into the pledge of Allegiance for a reason, to untie all of our nation. I think we would be losing a piece of where we come from if it is removed.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

Personally, I don't care either way. It doesn't bother me that much. What does bother me though is the fact that people are taking an oath that was made a VERY LONG TIME AGO, when situations and essentially "things" (for lack of a better word at the moment)were different. People are taking things that were accepted back then, and relating them to our lives today. The world is constantly changing and so are ideas and the concept of what it and isn't accepted. I get that and I accept it, but the fact still remains that it was an oath made a long time ago when God was a part of everything.

However, there are many ways to look at it, it's just frustrating that there are those people that push for a modern interpretation of things that date way back and there are others that call for a strict interpretation. It's annoying because the government is trying to bend over backwards to please everyone and that's impossible. If everyone stopped taking things generally accepted as a personal attack on them, we'd all be much happier. (None of this was meant as a personal attack and I'm sorry if I've offended anyone)

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

I don't agree that "under God" discriminates against anyone - particularly when you factor in the reality that nobody can force you to even say the pledge.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the USA, and for the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Ok - there's the pledge. I'm sure all the busybodies with too much time on their hands and an attention getting complex can move on to objecting to the "pledge allegiance" part next. Then they can argue that the flag doesn't really represent "the republic" - but racism, sexism, etc. Then we can fight about whether this is truly "one nation" or if it even stands for "liberty and justice."

Hey - this exercise is a lot like a standard indoctrination class by some left-wing deconstructionst in college.

Let's rewrite the pledge in a way that will satisfy the anti-american drama queens with nothing better to do than irritate normal people:

I do not pledge allegiance to the flag of the USA, or to the imperialism, racism, and sexism, which it stands, a multicultural nation, under secularism, with univeral healthcare and welfare for all...except the rich. Tax the rich!

There you go. Now it's acceptable to the Michael Newdow's of the world.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

I don't think the words should be taken out. We already took Pluto out of our solar system- I think thats enough change to cover a few years!

I do however disagree with making anyone say the pledge. At school we all have to stop and say the pledge. Even if we are in the hallways- we have administration that will bark at someone that doesn't stop and speak it.

I'm not sure if it's required to say the pledge or not, but it i've seen it strictly enforced at my school and I don't feel it's right.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

I really don't think taking "under god" out of the pledge is necessary. If it said "under Jesus" or something like that - then it is discriminatory. We all believe in God. Even atheists sometimes pray to god - either consciously or not. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with hearing "God" every day.

In my high school, the problem is not with saying "God" - but saying the pledge. People are lazy and prefer to just sit. Also, if the "God" part offends anyone, there isn't a law that forces them to say the pledge. You can just do something else. And like cmybird pointed out... this is a democracy... and if the majority prefers to say "God" - then the majority wins.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

I don't know if anyone knows this, but The Constitution is 34% Bible quoted. =] SOOO...this country IS under God!

I absolutely think that it should NOT be taken out. Cmybird is right-18%??? that's not very much...but I thought it was acutally a smaller percentage than that. more like 5% or something...i dont know for sure, but i remember hearing that somewhere...

    NO NO NO

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

It seems that religion has gotten a lot less "popular" in America over the years, but I still think we should keep some of the old ways. This country was founded on the belief in God, that he provided the country for us and that we did things in his way. Basically, no way, I don't think they should EVER take it out of the pledge, off the dollar, out of school, or any other place where God is held sacred.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

Nope it should not be taken out!!! I know it's a huge issue with some people. God does relate to all religions, whether it's a figure someone looks upto or just spiritual. I'm not sure how much I believe their being a supreme being, but I do believe in the spirit of god. I don't known if that make sense to anyone but the point is I don't believe that under god should be taken out. I do know that schools can not make a child say the pledge or the part under god, however a child/student has to respect that other people do say this by staying still and showing respect to others.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

No because it is our pledge and it has been the way it has for many years. Yes this country is more diverse and their are americans that worship differently. But I am sorry but this is how it was and I don't think it should be changed because some people don't like it.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

I believe that this country was founded with very spiritual people. I don't believe we should take under god out of our pledge. If more people walked with God then maybe this would be a better place to live.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

No we should not remove God from the pledge and this why. When prayer went out of schools, we have more kids dying when they go to school then ever before. I think it is wrong that because a few people who refuse to believe or just don't understand God should be able to say to us who believe that we don't want to hear about him in any form. This country was founded in part on free worship. If you don't wish to believe its up to you because we have free will, but understand we are not alone so the choice is yours believe or not keep god in the pledge or not that does not make him go away.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

i think that god should be taken out of the pledge of allegiance. there are many peopel who do not believe in god but do want to respect the country they are living in. there is supposed to be a seperation of church and state and by having god in the pledge of allegiance that takes away the seperation. would it really hurt to take out the god part? i dont think so. I am a believer in god and i have no problem with it.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

I personally don't think it should be taken out. It has been there for like forever. The people other take it offensive really needs to look at amendment number 1. I don't wanna make anyone mad but people needs to just let little things like this go.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

For those who are against the pledge with GOD name in it. Don't send your kids in school and leave the pledge alone. This country was build in the moral of GOD and people need to respect that as we respect theirs.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

Exactly, little things like that should be let go. Trying to force an unnecessary change to the pledge that most people do not like is going to just divide people.

If you don't believe in God - good for you. Suck it up and endure the pledge like a normal person. Like it matters if an atheist or whatever has to hear "under God." Oh- the horror!

I'm actually a supporter of the doctrine of separation of church and state - but some people take this way too far. The original idea was to keep the US government from endorsing a specific religious sect, using tax dollars to help promote or fund it, and from discrimination against citizens based on religion.

Now we have all these busybody grinches running around trying to make sure nobody gets to see a manger scene and throwing a fit if somebody says Merry Christmas.

Re: Should we take Under God Out of Our Pledge

If we take out God then we might as well just get ready for Hell. I think it's ridiculous that people would even find Under God offensive, if they don't like it, they don't have to say that part of the Pledge for that matter. But this country was built off people fighting to escape religious persecution so that they may worship and praise God Almighty. That would be an insult to the ancestors and to HIM to remove that statement from the pledge. If people put their trust in God instead of man we wouldn't have the problems we have today.
