What Can I Take For This Massive Migraine?? Whew..

I recently took a short nap and woke up with a migraine pounding so hard on the left side of my temple. It hurt so bad that I almost couldn't walk my dog!!! I don't feel like eating or drinking anything, but it hurt so bad that I have to take something. This is so strange because I usually feel upbeat and refreshed after a quick nap and I needed to take a nap so that I can read this 2 pdfs without falling asleep.

What pill meds do you take for pounding migraines? Does it have an immediate effect or do you need to eat something while you take the medicine?

Oh goodness, that sounds like the worst!

When I get a headache, I take two Aleve and drink a TON of water. It kicks in within 30 minutes and does a pretty wonderful job. My mother always suggests using a warm towel on the head, if you have time. I am a firm believer in aleve and water, though. I hope your headache goes away, that sounds terrible. Some fresh air may help too, deep breathing.

If you listen to the composer DustinO'Halloran it may calm your head, he makes beautifully relaxing and peaceful music.

Have a lovely night, I hope all goes well, and that I was able to help a tad!

    Hi LdyEricka,

I am so sorry to hear that you have a migraine. I have only had a dozen of them in my lifetime and they are not fun at all. However, my daughter has them 2-3 times in a week and she is miserable when they come on. She has been to a Neurologist and has had multiple MRI's and CAT scans . She has found that Excedrin Migraine has helped some and relieves the sharpness of the headache, but still has the nausea.

My daughter has been on numerous prescribed medications and she hates to have to take so many medicines that she does not thinks helps. She also takes 800 mg. of Ibuprofen that seems to help also. I really wish I could offer you more advice, but I know with my daughter, that it is a trial and error process. Sometimes certain meds work and other times they don't.

I suggest a dark room and an icepack on the back of the head may help. I am no doctor, but this is what my daughter tries on a regular basis with the Excedrin Migraine medication of course.

Good luck in getting rid of your migraine..

Oh gosh, Ericka!!! Ack! This brings back memories of when i used to get migranes like that. ..

I would make sure that I drink plenty of water because i may be dehydrated! Then i would take a cold shower and try to get some rest again.

Usually works! I hope you feel better. ..

Re: What Can I Take For This Massive Migraine?? Whew..

@MLJay---Thank you so much for the advice, I just took two of the Aleve and drank some water. I also took a cold shower and I'm feeling a little better but I'm going to go back to bed, and hopefully wake up and feel like a brand new person. It's been a while since I've gotten a migraine but I am definitely going to put the warm towel on my head as well.

@Joyce---Oh wow, I heard about people who get constant migraines on a regular basis on that show called Forensic Files and one lady said "the pain is so bad that I would go to the ends of the earth to find any treatment to cure this" and it was really scary. I couldn't imagine going through this everyday Joyce, I would lose my mind. I am so sorry your daughter goes through this on a regular basis and I heard that some of those neurological procedures are "experimental" and it's like taking a chance of making it worse. It's crazy, thank you so much for your advice Joyce.

@Christy---Thanks hun, I took two Aleves' from MLJay's advice and the cold shower did help some. I'm still not hungry but I drank a lot of water so hopefully that helps. But I'm going to go to bed and put this warm towel on my head because I still feel it, it's not as bad though. Thank you so much for the advice Christy.

Good Luck Tomorrow Everyone & Good Night :)

Re: What Can I Take For This Massive Migraine?? Whew..

    Hey LdyEricka!

I hope you wake up refreshed!

I have never had a migraine. And I rarely get headaches.

I think that since I rarely get headaches, they are easy for me to treat.

I usually just take 400mg to 600mg of ibuprofen. It has been the best over the counter pain medication for me. It seems to solve a lot of general aches and pains I have.

I do agree with everyone else and think drinking plenty of water is a good way to try to make a migraine or headache better. I know I have gotten headaches because I was slightly dehydrated. I think the solution there is to just always stay hydrated.

I know people will limit the stimulus around them. Maybe move to a nice quiet room. And stay away from computer screens.

I hope your Wednesday starts better than your Tuesday ended.

Re: What Can I Take For This Massive Migraine?? Whew..

@Eball---Thank you Erin, I actually got more sleep than I intended to. I slept nonstop for ten hours and I felt very refreshed. I didn't think I was that tired, but my body said differently. Placing a hot towel on my head seemed to work well, but I can honestly say that last night I slept like a baby.

Re: What Can I Take For This Massive Migraine?? Whew..

Sorry that you had to go through that.

I've had migraines before and they are not fun.
Usually and Excedrin or two, for me, can stop it, if it's in its early stage. But when it has been going on for a while it wont work fast enough.

The one guarantee, for me, to get rid of it is to take a very hot shower. The hot water relaxes the muscles in my neck and makes me feel better. After that I would suggest taking a nap in a dark room.

Sorry again that you had to go though that, and I hope this helps.
