Won my first scholarship: Now what?

I won the top rookie scholarship on collegenet yesterday and i just wanted to say thank you for everyone who voted for me. Now i am a little confused about the next process. I already recieved the email saying i won but am i supposed to wait for another email or should i just fax the info myself. And is the scholarship taxable?

Re: Won my first scholarship: Now what?

    Hi Future,

First of all, Congratulations on your scholarship win! :) I actually sent an e-mail to support because I was a bit confused about the "winner acknowledgement" form that we need to fill out. You should be receiving another e-mail this upcoming week, since yesterday was the end of a scholarship win quarter. The followup e-mail will contain a link that will provide you access the forms that you need to fill out. Just wait for that e-mail, it will provide you with everything you need to claim your winnings.

The "win" only needs to be claimed for taxes if you are using it to pay off your student loan debt. You'll need to submit a W-9 form in that case. If you are submitting/disbursing the scholarship to a university or college for expenses, then the win is not taxable from my understanding of the official rules.

Thank you so much for offering some clarification jareddivido!

Re: Won my first scholarship: Now what?

Hi Guys congratulations on your win :)

I won a scholarship in October and I was just as confused as you are. I sent an email yesterday about my winning and received this...

"Congrats on your win! I apologize for the confusing wording in our automated messages, so let me simplify it for you.

We disburse awards after every calendar quarter, so in your case, sometime after December 31, 2014, you will receive an official End of Quarter email. This email will contain instructions and a link that you will use to acknowledge your award.

You will want to acknowledge your award within 30 days of the end of the quarter. Failure to do so will risk in forfeit of the award. Once you acknowledge, you are locked in and have a year to disburse your award.

The disbursement process can be done at the same time of acknowledging. You will have the option to upload loan documentation for disbursing towards a student loan, or you can submit our Enrollment Verification Form to your school. Again, all this will be available to you at the time of acknowledging.

So at this time, there is nothing you need to do. Due to the New Year holiday, our office will be closed January 1 -2, as well as over the weekend. I am not certain as to when the elections department will be sending out the End of Quarter notifications, but I would estimate it to be during the week of the 5th.

I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me with with any additional questions. "

    Hope this helped *wink*
