    Jury Duty

    Hello All,

First off thank you to everyone who voted and commented on my forums! You guys are the best!

Now for my topic, a coworker of mine has been out of the office for a week because of jury duty. He said the experience was amazing, but there are some big decisions to make and a lot of waiting..lol
I have never been called for jury duty, even though many have told me you’re lucky not to be I still want to experience it. It sounds like something major in the community.

What about you? Have you ever been called for jury duty? What happened? What about anyone you know? Heard any stories?

Thanks for stopping by to read this! Have a great day!

    Hi Grace,

I am only 19 so it would be unusual for someone my age to have been called. I do not ever want to be called. The life-changing decisions that would need to be made is well beyond my thought process right now.

My grandpa used to be called all the time when he was younger (he's now in his 80's) and loved it. It made him seem like he was doing something really important. My mom used to have a co-worker who was called for jury duty 3 times in one year. It was a real hardship for the company, not to mention her family.

Thanks for the forum, and have a great day!

    Re: Jury Duty

    Hey Grace,

I'm like you, I want to be called for jury duty! I think the experience would be irreplaceable. I have been called once and I had to report downtown. However, before my group even got called in to be questioned, the case they were considering me for reached a settlement, so I was dismissed. I was actually pretty bummed.

A couple years ago there were 2 people at my work that were called for Grand Jury duty at the same time. With that, they actually report for an entire month, and hear a whole bunch of different cases. I thought that was awesome! They both said they loved the experience, and learned so much.

I think the people that say you're lucky to not have been called are the ones that would go into it with a negative attitude and not be open-minded about the experience. As long as you go into it with an open mind, then I think you can really get a lot out of it.

Hopefully one day I'll get to experience the real thing!

    Re: Jury Duty

    Hey Grace,

I have actually been called twice, but only once did I get selected to sit for the jury.

The first time I was only 20 years old and I pretty much knew I was going to be picked. I wasn't working at the time and it was summer time so I wasn't taking any classes either. And sure enough I got picked. It lasted pretty much all week and we even had to go the following Monday. It was very interesting to experience but had I been working and had to take off, I'd probably be upset. The pay isn't that great at all.

The second time was only a couple years ago when I was 25. While I thought the first time was interesting, this time was during the worst possible time, during finals week. I actually had a final (online luckily) on the first day I had jury duty. I lucked out as they sent us home early that day and told us we had to return Weds. Which I had a final Tues to take so it worked out good. And well they ended up giving us the small check since you get paid even if you aren't picked for the days they had you there. Told me good luck with any finals and congrats on graduating, which I was graduating the following week. I'm also kinda glad I didn't get picked as the case was a murder case (first one was a drug-related case).

Hope you have a great day!

    Re: Jury Duty

    Hi Grace,

I'm surprised to see you and others here be so interested in jury duty. I was called 5 years ago while I was in college. The first time I pushed back the date because I was too far away. The second time, I showed up. I do admit that being interviewed by the lawyers and hearing about what other people do was interesting. The long waiting was not. I was selected to serve but didn't have to because both sides settled. Plus the little check helped too.

Personally I wouldn't want to be selected for a super big case and be there for weeks. A few days is enough for me.
