    Dealing with Anxiety

    Hey CNet,

    Do you have any issues dealing with anxiety or is it controllable by your mind?

    I am one to tend to let me mind overrule the majority of things in my life and tend to feel worried, overwhelmed and anxious the majority of the time. It's something I've dealt with for a while and am hoping to learn tactics to relieve some of the anxiety from a day to day basis.

    Is anxiety something you have to deal with from time to time and how do you handle it?

    I am a thinker. I overthink. And this often does create stress and anxiety for me. I am a perfectionist, too and a people pleaser,which also adds to my levels of stress and anxiety. I have learned to try to cope with it though. Here's what I have learned:

    1) Accept that you cannot control everything. We need to learn to put our stress into perspective: is it really as bad as we think?

    2) Do your best. Instead of aiming for perfection, which isn't possible, be proud of however close you get.

    3) Maintain a positive attitude. Make an effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.

    4) (Which is where I started) Learn what triggers your anxiety. Is it work, family, school or something else you can identify? Write a journal when you are feeling stressed or anxious and look for a pattern.

    I hope these things help you. They are working for me. It is a daily struggle but I do believe I have gotten much better! You are a really great person!

    I'm sorry to hear about your anxiety issues. I do hope it gets better. It's important to have a good support network possibly one that includes a therapist who as a trained professional might be able to help you develop the coping skills necessary to deal with your anxiety. I haven't suffered very much from anxiety luckily as my issues manifest as depression rather than worry. I did go through a period of time where I had panic attacks but I suppose that is different as well so I don't have much experience with feeling super anxious except in normal anxiety producing situations like public speaking and the like. I think it's important to remember that we all have our issues and unique challenges and we will become stronger people as we work through those struggles. It's also important to be able to know and be willing to reach out to others for help. I have also seen some great guided journals that help one to work through anxiety in different ways. I think the theory that by putting some of your worries on paper it may alleviate the stress in your mind. I do hope you start feeling better soon and are able to develop effective coping skills.

    First of all, congratulations on passing your big exam! I hope you have or will celebrate it! You deserve that! Cheers to you!

    I'm sorry you have to deal with anxiety like you wrote. I do too.

    I wasn't until I became an adult. I was a naive trustworthy young girl who always believed in the best of people. When I was twenty one, I discovered that the church I'd spent a decade in was a scam and a cult. My whole family got out, but it took me a long time to trust anyone again. Then a couple of years later, a neighbour attacked and raped me in my own yard, and even though the police caught him and threw him in jail, that's when I started suffering big time with anxiety.

    I've asked for and received a lot of help. And I've always been lucky to be surrounded by the best people. I still struggle with anxiety today, trusting people and especially walking in the dark at night alone.

    But! My best advice is to talk about it. The worst thing you can do, is to think there's something wrong with you, and feel ashamed. Ain't nobody got time for that!

    Anxiety is a real thing. And it might not always be 100% curable, but there's help to be had if we only ask of it.
