Do you put your ketchup in the refrigerator?

    Hey CNET!

Do you refrigerate ketchup after you open it? Our family has always stored it in the fridge but we know people who don't! I did a little research and here is what I found out.

According to an article by Cindy Ledbetter in February of 2017:

    Heinz said:

Because of its natural acidity, Heinz ketchup is shelf-stable. However, its stability after opening can be affected by storage conditions. We recommend that this product be refrigerated after opening. Refrigeration will maintain the best product quality after opening.

Hunt's had a different opinion on the subject:

Hunt’s: “It’s all a matter of preference,” a spokesperson told HuffPost. “Hunt’s has great tomato taste in the fridge or right off the shelf. It’s truly a matter of choice.”

Four out of five major ketchup brands agree that once ketchup has been opened, it’s time to stick it in your fridge. The same rule doesn’t really apply to ketchup in restaurants, as the Today show’s health and nutrition editor Madelyn Fernstrom pointed out, because the turnover is so great.

So, do you keep your ketchup in the refrigerator?

    Have a great day!

Re: Do you put your ketchup in the refrigerator?

    Hey Kyle,

We put ours in the fridge once it's open. I grew up doing this as well with my family. Everyone I know does it and I can't really think of anyone that keeps it out after opening it.

I will say I do like ketchup after it's been in the fridge more than when we first open a bottle and use it.

Hope you have a great day!

Re: Do you put your ketchup in the refrigerator?

    Hi Kyle,
Our packaged food has so much preservatives in it that I am sure it is fine not refrigerated but my family does keep our ketchup in the fridge when we open it. Also American ketchup has sooo much sugar. When I was traveling around South America I had the best ketchup ever there. It’s a brand called All Gold and it had only 3 ingredients tomoatoes, salt, vinegar. That’s it. It tasted so fresh and wasn’t as sweet as ours. My friend I was traveling with hates ketchup usually but loved it there.

    Hey Kyle!

I don't really like ketchup honestly. It's too sweet for my taste, but that doesn't mean we don't have ketchup in the house. Two of my siblings eat it all the time, so we always have ketchup around. And yes, it's always in the fridge.

It just feels safer to put it in there. This way you can ensure that the ketchup doesn't go bad or anything like that.

Good luck in today's election Kyle, and have a wonderful day!

I put my ketchup in the fridge when its open but if its new we dnt put it in the fridge and it doesn't go bad

Re: Do you put your ketchup in the refrigerator?

yes I prefer my ketchup in the refrigerator if not it will go bad and means spending more money In the market.

Re: Do you put your ketchup in the refrigerator?

    Hi Kyle,

Once we open our ketchup we put it in the fridge. Before that we just keep it in a cabinet. I have never heard of people leaving open ketchup out after its opened. I feel like it would go bad despite what they say.

Re: Do you put your ketchup in the refrigerator?

    Hi Kyle!

We always put our ketchup in the refrigerator after it is opened. My mom used to work in a restaurant when she was in college and she said they left them out all the time. They go through it pretty quickly, but still. Now that I know that it makes me wonder about the places I eat!

    Have a great day!

Re: Do you put your ketchup in the refrigerator?

    Aloha Kyle,

We keep our ketchup in the refrigerator. I feel like most things have to be kept cold once they are open to slow the growth of mold and bacteria. Like you pointed out, ketchup in the home doesn't move nearly as fast as a restaurant. Keeping it out is probably fine but will shorten the life of ketchup by some degree.

Re: Do you put your ketchup in the refrigerator?

    Hey Kyle,
While living with my mother, we kept EVERYTHING in the fridge, including vanilla extract, potatoes, especially our ketchup. On the flip side, at my fathers house we always kept the ketchup on the shelf, in fact, everybody that I have ever been friends with have mentioned how weird it was that my mom keeps everything in the fridge, including our ketchup.

    Such an interesting topic!
