Can You Nap? Are You One to Take a Nap?

    Hi CNet,

Lately, I've been struggling with insomnia. That's why I am posting sooooo very early this morning. Although I would prefer not to spend these early morning hours awake and lose valuable sleep time, I have found that I am able to power nap during my lunch break (if needed) and it really seems to help! I have always been a "napper" but more of the lazy, weekend sort of naps. I used to scoff at the idea of a power nap, but a short 20 minute nap has really been a game changer for me!

Can or do you nap? I know some people just can't shut off everything and fall asleep in the daytime and others can sleep, but just can't shake off the grogginess of a nap so they don't nap. How about power napping? Have you ever tried it?

    Thanks for reading,

    Christi

Side note,,, If you suffer from insomnia , do you have any tricks or tips? :)

Re: Can You Nap? Are You One to Take a Nap?

    Aww Christi,

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble sleeping. First the sickness, then this. I wonder if recovering from the cold is impacting your sleep. Perhaps you have some anxiety or other issues in your life that is impacting your ability to sleep.

I am an on/off insomniac. There are periods in my life (major stresses/transitions) etc where my sleep schedule gets really wacky (I can't get to sleep until late and/or I wake up really early), and then every so often I'll have nights when I have difficulty falling asleep (for whatever reason).

For most of my life, I have had no problem taking naps. In fact, I rely on and cherish and adore my naps. Sometimes, I can even fall asleep in the back of the car, and it is something that I just really needed because I was almost wanting to fall asleep during the day. I just read in a book about self-care that a professional went through a period where she always felt tired in the afternoon, and she would take a siesta and wake up a the same time every afternoon, like clockwork, feeling refreshed.

I have heard much about the importance of sleep hygiene and maintaining a regular sleep schedule (going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday, having a routine before going to bed, reducing technology exposure a few hours before sleeping, etc.). I think it is important to respect your body and your needs in regards to sleep. If you can't sleep, that is just the way it is right now. Eventually, you will probably find your way back to a more typical sleep routine. If you are tired at a certain time and need a nap, then that's what your body needs. Want to go to bed at 7 p every night? Go for it. Are you more of a 2 am bedtime person? All the power to you. Some people need only 5 hours; other people need 10. I think the only important thing is that you are giving yourself the amount of sleep you need, and not trying to deprive your body and mind of the precious rest it needs.

    Hi Christi,
Sorry to hear about your sleep problems, you don't seem to be having much luck lately. I will try to find a 4 leaf clover and send it your way. As for napping, I can't nap. I loooove napping but I find it makes me more sleepy and groggy afterwards and then at night I can't fall asleep. I have never been able to do a 20min power nap and then wake up fresh and rejuvenated. If anything they make me grouchy because I want to keep on sleeping. Maybe try not napping and see if that helps with your insomnia? Good luck!

    Hey Christi,

Woohoo! Naps are my favorite lol Honestly I feel like I get a better rest on a one hour nap than I do with a full night's sleep sometimes. I've struggled with insomnia in the past and the best way to cure it is to still stay on a routine. Even if you're laying in bed and not getting anywhere, try to get into bed at the same time every night. I diffuse certain essential oils as well that assist in getting to sleep and staying asleep. The best two I've found to work are "peace and calming" and "cedarwood". Just rub some on your feet. Give those a try!

Re: Can You Nap? Are You One to Take a Nap?

    Hey Christi,

There are so many days I wish I could take a nap but being a stay at home parent to a 3 year old who doesn't take naps anymore, I would be afraid to take a nap as I might wake up to find total destruction lol. I used to nap with him when he did take a nap and it helped me out a lot. I think if I could take one now, I would feel better than I do most days.

I have trouble falling asleep too and plus I will admit some nights I stay up because that is the only time I get "me time". While I do plan to work when he starts school, I do look forward to more time to myself even if it will be at work and I may or may not actually be alone. I actually hope to find a job with others I can talk to.
