    Least Amount of Sleep you can Function On?

    Hey CNET,

    What’s the least amount of sleep you can function on? And how often do you really cut into your sleep?

    So last night and by last night I mean this morning, I was finally able to go to bed at 6:15 am because I finally finished my lab report! But then I had to get up at 7am to make it to my 8am. So that was fun! But anyways so far I’m doing good and feel like I can still somewhat function! However I feel like it’s a bad habit of mine to cut into sleep too often. I’ve had to work overnight shifts for work from 11pm-9:30 am and then be at another job at 12pm-5pm. And through all my nights and days I’ve realized POWER NAPS ARE WHERE IT’S AT. They are lifesavers! However, i will eventually crash and fall asleep at 6pm the following day or so and not wake up until the next morning!

    Your schedule looks hectic, I thought mine was crazy.

    I can get thru a day with having at least 5 hours sleep. This is my first year of college, playing college football and having an evening job, so after being in school now for 4 weeks reports are now coming in where just last night when I got home from work I had to finish an essay for my English class this morning, so I didn't finish my essay til 1 am after getting home from work at 11:45pm and my class starts at 8:30am and I have a 30 min drive if there's no traffic. So I got 4 hours of sleep this morning...not good!

    Oh my Lanta that sounds awful.........

    You must be a medical student or something because that takes some serious dedication! Not only is your sleep schedule suffering because of school, but I bet you aren't able to spend time with the people you care about because you are running all over!

    Honestly, it is tough, but I can tell you are really intelligent. If anyone is going to make it happen, it will be you. The benefits will be so worth it in the end!!

    As for me, I need at least 6 hours of sleep if I am going to mentally function. If I want to be preforming at 100% that number needs to be 8. Sleep is something I absolutely need for school. Sometimes, it is better for me to take a nap than it is to cram study for one more hour.

    I completely agree with you on the naps though. If I couldn't take power naps, I would have burned out a long time ago. Every moment you take to let your bran catch up counts!

    My sleeping schedule is absolutely insane. I have a habit of staying up waayy too late, whether it be from losing track of time or studying for a test the next day. It's even worse during the summer! At one point, I didn't sleep for a good day or two. I certainly do not recommend it, because my brain was much, and I basically turned into a zombie for the entire week. Not. Fun. I totally agree with you on naps. Best time of the day.

    Anyways! Don't push yourself too hard, friend. Your health is just as important as work and school. :)

    Wow your schedule is insane! I hope you are able to get good solid sleep soon. That’s good that power naps are able to get you through until you can crash.

    I can function on no sleep at all, though I very much prefer not to. I love my sleep especially when I am sleeping as well as I am now. Good solid sleep is the best. Getting about 7-8 hours for me has me feeling my best. Sometimes I have a hard time getting to sleep and if I am really off on my sleeping pattern I could end up being up all night. This hasn’t happened in a very long time thankfully. Usually just miss out on an hour or two and then get too sleep. I don’t cut into my sleep often. Luckily I work a 7-3 job and have ample time to study and do what I need to during normal waking hours. I like to get up early but if I go to bed later then I sometimes miss my early wake up time.

    Sleep is so important yet I think because we don’t always feel the effects of missing sleep right away we think we can get away with missing out on hours or a whole night’s sleep. It’s easy for other things to become more important than sleep but eventually we come back around to needing more sleep.

    That’s insane!

    I don’t get much sleep either, it seems sleep is a luxury. All I wanted to do was play as a child and when we had to take naps I revolted. Now as an adult all I want to do is take naps.

    I constantly go to be late and have to get up early. Last night I got 5 hours, which seems about average. I agree with cramergirl. I can sleep 6 hours and do fine, but I know I could do better. Then if I get 8 hours I feel so much better. I got 6 hours yesterday night and I felt ok, but I realized I was spacy at points. I honestly forget when the last week I had a full nights rest everyday!

    Also, I’ve found that getting sleep, instead of cramming for an exam is way better than the extra studying. I’ve had times where I stayed up to late and wanted to fall asleep in the exam. Needless to say those exams were worse for me than one where I studied less, but got more sleep. 45 minutes of sleep is way too little. It messes with your circadian rhythm. I’d suggest finding your priorities and relinquishing unnecessary commitments, your health will thank you.

    Oh my, I could not function on that type of sleep schedule! I really need 7 hours of sleep each night but would prefer 8 hours of sleep! I never cut into sleep time, because my brain really stops being able to focus on material after 10pm! I would much rather go to bed early and get up early to study, write a paper, or do a project!
    How do you function on that type of schedule?! I would not be able to stay awake through classes! I hope you find a better system for yourself!
