Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hello CNetters,

Do have people take their shoes off before coming into the house?

We take our shoes off in the entryway of our house. It really grosses me out to have people walk around on the floors inside the house with the same shoes who knows what they stepped on outside, especially if it is on the carpet.

How about you guys? Do you customarily take your shoes off in the house? Does it bother you when people leave their shoes on in the house?

I look forward to reading your responses,

    Karen

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hi Karen,

This topic brings back a not-so-pleasant childhood memory. My grandparents home is a no shoes allowed zone, and that it the way my mom grew up. My dad, not so much. I think he even wears his shoes in the shower! That was a big problem every time we visited my grandparents. And it was a problem in our house because he would track in a bunch of who knows what onto the carpet. So that made my mom angry, as she constantly had to vacuum and it was hard for us as babies to play on the floor. Finally, my mom just got rid of the carpet and had hard floors put in so at least it is easier to keep clean. My dad doesn't like it, but he also refuses to take off his shoes, so that is their compromise. When I get my own place, it will be a no shoes zone.

    Thanks for the forum,

    Kasey

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

SHOES OFF! I can't stand that! It's so nasty! My in-laws throw a huge fit every time they come to our house and I make them take off their shoes. I have two young children and at the time, a baby that was crawling. I do not need her picking up any additional germs.

They have carpet in their house that is easily 30 years old and they always wear shoes in their house. I hate letting my kids go over there and play because that carpet is just filthy and lord knows what is lurking in the carpet. They say that your shoes carry a ton of animal feces on it. No. Thank. You.

    Thanks!

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hi Karen,

I am adding a "No" to shoes on in the house! Eeeeeww for sure!

I always take my shoes off when I go in somebody's house. Some people will say thanks and that they really appreciate the consideration. Others will say oh don't bother we never take our shoes off. If that happens, I always put my shoes back on because I don't want my feet or socks to get dirty from their floors. LOL! I'm with Morgan,,,you never know what is lurking in the carpet!!

    Hope your day goes well,

    Hey Karen,

There’s really no rule in my house at all. I usually take my shoes off anyway when I get home. If I had to choose I would rather people take their shoes off in my house. Although, it doesn’t really bother me, I don’t think about it.

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hey Karen!

The first thing my mother says to all of us when we get into the house is take them off. She either says she just mopped the floor or we will get the floor dirty. I completely agree with you about not knowing where peoples shows have been. Especially if they walk on your carpet that can be gross because you sit or lay on your carpet. When I have my own house I will most likely carry on the no shoes in the house.

    Thanks!

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hey Karen,

I take my shoes off by habit in my apartment, or if I'm at a family members house, especially at my grandparents because I know better, but I always ask friends if I need to at their house, if they say it's fine, I usually leave them on.

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hey!

My mom never made us take out shoes off in our house. But when i get my own place and have my own family i will probably make it no shoes. I think all parents with newborns or toddlers should not bring shoes in the house because kids tend to always be on the floor and could be exposed to who knows what!

    Have a good one!

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hi kltslp38,

I take my shoes off unless I have to run inside the house for something really quick. It also grosses me out to wear shoes in the house especially on carpet. I have pretty dirty jobs and sometimes even leave my work shoes outside. Today I’m at a ranch and have undoubtedly stepped in horse poop. I couldn’t imagine bringing that in the house where I eat, sleep, and relax.

I was raised to always take off my shoes in a new house. Often times people will tell me to put them back on to be polite, but it’s just a habit I have. I don’t see any good reason to change that either.

When I went to Japan, it would have been taboo to leave your shoes on in the house. The family I visited had slippers we could use to go to be bathroom though. It’s interesting to see how different cultures view this matter.

    Thanks for the post!

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Aloha,

Here is Hawaii it is a custom to remove your shoes before entering someone's home. Growing up at my house we always took our shoes off. It does feel weird not to take my shoes off when entering a home. I find it comes naturally to leave them at the door.

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hi Karen,

Absolutely shoes off!!! I do not wear my shoes in the house and I do not like other people wearing their shoes in the house! We were always taught not to walk on the carpet with our shoes on... some lessons from childhood stick and this is one of them!!!

    Have a great day!

    Thanks for the forum,

    Karen

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hey!

we definitely take our shoes off before we even enter the house. We have always had this rule of not ever bringing shoes inside like forever so no one dares to step in with shoes on. We keep the inside clean and we have like sandles to wear inside.

    Have a great day!

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hi Karen,

I take my shoes off in the house too. This past month my family has been looking at houses, and we still take off our shoes every time before walking through a new house. (Admittingly, it does get annoying though, especially when looking at a garage or an unfinished basement).

Thanks for the post! Have a nice day!

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hello,

In my house we have a lobby where we take our shoes off. It bothers me when others, in their own homes, don’t imbibe the same principles. I have heard some cases where some people have no problem of going on thier bed with their shoes on. Nonetheless, I do think people should take their shoes of when they are in the house due to Sanitary issues.

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hi,

Our house has always had a no shoes in the house rule. Yes, people enter the foyer but there is a place mat for the shoes to be put once they are taken off. Those who know us, know the rule as well. It's second nature to them after all these years. They come in and automatically take them off. I see your point that they still come into the house with them on, but it is a small area that needs to be mopped and really kept up. I agree, wearing shoes throughout the house is gross.

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

    Hello Kltslp38.

I personally like the "no shoes in the house" policy. It keeps the carpet from wearing as fast and offers a sense of respect for entering someone else home in my opinion.

Re: Shoes off or on in the house?

Hi Karen. I usually take my shoes off when I enter somebody's house. I just feel it's rude to walk around someone's clean house with your dirty shoes. Also it just feels uncomfortable for me to wear my shoes indoors. It's kind of unnatural.
