    Naked art inappropriate?

Do you find art depicting nudity inappropriate for public display?

I find beauty in such sculptures such as the David in Florence, Italy, and personally don't think they are too inappropriate, but I would admit it might be a different story if I had a little child with me. Many world-renowned museums and famous buildings hold naked sculptures and paintings. Should statues like the David wear underwear or other clothes? What are your guys' thoughts?

I can't wait to hear from you guys!

    Hey Jon,

I agree with you that there are so many works of art that are absolutely magnificent that portray nudity. I had the experience of visiting Venice, Florence, and Rome and saw wonderful pieces of art including sculptures and then saw the Sistine Chapel which was "breathtaking".

I understand that it may be difficult to decide how to tell or explain such art to young children but I think it can be done.

I believe these are magnificent pieces or art and an important part of history.

    Thanks for the post!

    Have a good one!

No, I do not deem nudity in art, such as the David in Florence, Italy as inappropriate. I believe it to be a part of history and ancient beliefs. For example, Greeks believed men should be strong and muscular, so their sculptures depict this. Being that I am studying art, I believe any form is about beauty if done tastefully.

    Hi Jon,

I do not find nudity in art inappropriate!

Bodies in art and in general should be appreciated, not sexualized.

    Thanks for this post!

    Re: Naked art inappropriate?

    Hi Jon,

I totally agree that these sculptures are absolutely marbelous (pun intended). However, I also do not think the sculptures should be filtered around children. I think it is better to have children used to peoples' natural bodies so it is normalized and they do not freak out so much when they are in their teens or bully other kids who are not a certain body shape or size.

One analogy is with alcohol. As a child grows up, if they are exposed to alcohol in a mature, responsible manner by their family or other adults, then they are less likely to be exposed to alcohol at a huge college party and think that is safe or normal. In my childhood, I always watched my parents drink responsibly and then when I turned older, I was allowed to drink at family gatherings and it was not a problem to me because drinking responsibly was normalized and not a problem.

In the same way, the human body should not be shunned from children because it does not have to be sexualized or a big deal if you do not make it a big deal.

    Cheers!
