How long could you last without electricity?

What is the longest you have gone without power? Did you manage ok or were you irritable not having electricity?

Aside from camping, the longest I have gone was almost three days during a storm. I tend to get rather grumpy after about a day. By then, the house is usually cold and time goes by slow. I constantly flip light switches on out of habit and trying to figure out what to eat without a stove or microwave, afraid to open the refrigerator is just not enjoyable. I think I could last longer than that without electricity, but I wouldn't be much fun to be around.

    Hey,

I have gone months without electricity. Back when i used to live overseas, we had power for few days or hours throughout the day and it would be gone for weeks or months sometimes. It’s really difficult not having electricity. People just cook stuff on those little gas tanks. It’s like a stove but haz gas tank under it where you can cook. Also, we had so many candles lit up when it got darker. We kept ourselves warm under several blankets. To be honest these were some of my beautiful memories. I miss it some times because all the family would gather together and talk for hours and hours. We had some wonderful conversations. Everyone of course slept early like around 9 or 10 because there was nothing to do. As i am saying these things, i just remember how much peace there was in my life without electricity and technology. If i could re-live those days i would :)

Thanks for bringing back good memories!
    Have a great day!

We actually had to go a week without power! It was pretty rough because it was in the heat of summer where the temps were in the 90s. Thankfully at the time it was just my husband and our German Shepherd. I would go sit in the car with the AC on for our dog because he was just miserable. I would also put ice packs in the cooler and lay them on him at night when we were trying to sleep. It really wasn't too bad for us but now that I have young children, I could see that being pretty dang miserable!

    Thanks!

    Hey!

The longest I've gone without electricity was about a week. That was when Hurricane Sandy hit the New Jersey area. We were without power for a very long time. There were shortages of gas and people were rationed and were told they could only get gas on odd or even days. We had to go to either Starbucks or a location that had outlets and power to charge our phones and laptops. It was pretty miserable and tough. The only good thing about the whole mess was that I had a long week off of school and work. I don't think I could have survived happily much longer... I suppose that I could definitely survive as I had food and shelter but living without electricity in our society today is very challenging!!

    Thanks!

The longest I have gone without electricity was for 12 days. Like Tom, I also struggled through Hurricane Sandy. It was cold and wet. I remember charging my phone in my car and the battery died to the car. Ugghhh. Also gasoline was scarce so It was messy overall

Wow, not very long at all! I am so impressed at how you all coped without it for a really long period of time. In our neighborhood, we tend to lose power for hours at a time quite frequently for no apparent reason and without warning and it is a real pain and I often wonder how people make it through those days or weeks long outages.

In our household, my autistic brother is anxiety-ridden during a power outage which greatly adds to the stress and difficulty of getting through it.

Wow! That sounds awful. Lots of respect to you for being able to survive that!

I guess it depends on the season for me. In the summer I like to go camping for a weekend or so, but I still tend to use some electricity at the campsite, whether it's a hot shower or a flashlight or something. Also, whenever there is a power outage when I live, it tends to be in the summertime so the weather is milder.

In the winter, I couldn't do it. I already get cold very easily, and the lack of both heat and hot showers would be the death of me.

Thanks for the post! Have a nice day, and let's enjoy our electricity haha!

Re: How long could you last without electricity?

    Hey!

Like you, I've only went without power when camping. I've gone a week without power at my house due to a big storm, but there were some places in the area that still had power, so I could go there if I needed a charge on my phone, etc.

I think I could go longer if I had planned and prepared for it, but right now if I lost power unexpectedly it would be a huge inconvenience and I'd be very irritable. It's amazing how much we rely on power in our society. I know I rely on it heavily on a daily basis! NjBr's story about adapting to it while overseas is pretty amazing!

    Thanks for the post!
