    Career & Internship Opportunities

Have you ever been to a career and/or internship fair at school?
If yes, how did you present yourself, what did you do, what was it like?
Do you have any advice for me?

I am going to an internship fair this Wednesday. I am looking for HR positions, so it is a perfect opportunity! I am going to print 15 resumes just in case. I am unsure what to say or how to present myself. I will dress nicely that day so I am on point. Still, knowing how to make conversation is confusing and I do not want to embarrass myself. My plan is to just be authentic, smile, make eye contact, and stand with good posture.

I am very nervous with this event and just want to run away! However, I know many people would be jealous of this golden opportunity.

    Cheers!

Just as with most things, I think this opportunity is all about balance. On the one hand, you want to be open to new opportunities you hadn't considered before the fair; on the other hand, you want to go in knowing what your passions are and feeling confident about what you could bring to an internship. You should want the organization to be as good a fit for you as you are for it, so don't be afraid to ask questions and let them know what you're looking for in an internship!

    Song,

Sounds like you are on the right track. It's scary to go into something like this because you can't truly know what to expect. Just be yourself, show that you understand professionalism, and try to learn as much as you can from the people you talk with. Even if the fair doesn't land you a job/internship, it will be awesome practice for future opportunities.

My opinion on attire...dress for the job you want, not the job you have. You're a student, but that doesn't mean you have to dress like one. A blazer dresses up simple outfits and looks very professional. Especially for a job in HR where you'll be face to face with people all the time.

    Good luck!

The best piece of advice I have is to just not think about it to much, be mindful of over thining because that will just make you hyperanalyze everything you are doing and saying and the result will be that you will not be present with the person and they won't see the true you. How can you be authentic if your thinking ego mind takes over?

Deep breaths, relax, they were once in your shoes and will notice instantly if you are being real with them.

    Hi Song,

I think that is a great opportunity for you! It may be scary, but doing things that scare you get you to where you want to be!

I agree with the comments above. Dress for the job that you want, and stay calm and relaxed.

Also, remember the jobs need to be a good fit for you as well as your potential employer. Pay attention to cues that either excite you, but pay attention to companies that give you bad vibes, too. If you're not getting a good vibe, you don't have to spend time at that company's booth in the fair.

Good luck and I hope this brings you the opportunity that you're looking for!

    Thanks,
    Megan
