Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hey cnet friends!

    Happy election day!

Can you listen to music while you study? If you do, what kind of music do you listen to? If you can't do you prefer quiet study sessions?

Depending on what I'm doing I'll listen to music. And most times I try to listen to music without words or songs in another language because I read an article about how listening to English while trying to work in English is a clash on your brain and it becomes a little too much for it to really focus just on your homework because you can understand everything that's happening in the music so it's actually a distraction.

If I'm doing math, I can usually do some English songs, or if I'm just doing something like Cnet where I can easily zone in and out and just type responses I'll let a few songs in English come through. But overall I will listen to music to have something on in the background.

    Hey Emma!

I find that I have better luck listening to things like rain recordings.

Music is fone sometimes too, but if it has lyrics or I really like the song, it can distract me.

    Have a good one!

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi Emma,

I find it very hard to listen to music while studying or even trying to concentrate because it is very distracting.

Thanks for the forum! Good luck!

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi Emma,

    How are doing?

I can't listen to music with words while studying because i could get really distracted but if it's classical music, i'll put it low and i'll be relax which helps do a lot better at studying. If you want to be relaxed while studying, i would advise you to listen to a few classical music because it could help keep your stress levels low. Wishing you a wonderful study time.

Thank you so much for this forum and have a wonderful day!

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi all!

I don't usually listen to music while I study because I find it super distracting. If the song happens to have words I'll end up attempting to sing along and then it just goes down hill from there.

    Thanks for the forum!

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

I WISH I could listen to music while I study, but I am easily distracted! I love listening to music, but for some reason when I study it just makes it hard for me to concentrate!

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

I'm very particular about listening to music. I can listen to certain types like acoustic or classic piano, basically anything without lyrics that is semi soothing. The catch is that I can't listen through headphones but out loud. I don't know why but if I listen with headphones I can only think about the song instead of it being in the background of the important work I'm doing.

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

I cannot listen to music while studying. I like quite study sessions so I can fully concentrate on the material.

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi Emma,

I can listen to music while I study. I think it is because once I get really into something I am capable of zoning things out. I realize that even with music, I don't actually hear it until I'm out of my "study" zone. I usually listen to Japanese songs because as you mentioned English songs can conflict with the material.

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi Emma!

I love to listen to music when I study. I usually listen to it at a really low volume so that it won't be a distraction. Listening to music while studying math helps me focus sooo much, but when studying other things like Spanish or English it's a big distraction for me no matter the volume. :(

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi Emma!

I love listening to music while I study.Although I only listen while studying math, when studying other subjects I can't because I need to be able to memorize go over the material and I need complete silence for that.

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Good evening, Emma!

I can listen to classical music when I am studying but nothing else. If there are words to the music or strong beats then it is distracting for me. I study best in absolute silence; however, if there is noise in the room it is best for me to put buds in my ears and turn on classical music. I don't really listen to the music, it is more of a sound barrier to the outside noise.

    Have a great day!

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

Love love love music when I study or do homework. Its funny, just today I found myself listening to rap while writing an essay and realized I was saying the lyrics while typing. I truly think it has taught my brain how to multitask on another level, so weird to have different words coming out of my mouth and fingertips at the same time.

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi Emma!

I’m not sure there isn’t anytime I couldn’t listen to music! I am a music lover and as distracting as some think it is, I can listen to it constantly!
I actually think it motivates me and sometimes helps me focus more. If it is too quiet- I get bored and sleepy!
As a supervisor, I have had to learn that all people aren’t the same. Music is a definite distraction for some and productivity is hindered. Therefore, I leave the decision to turn on a radio up to each office staff!

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi there!

I absolutely cannot listen to music while I study. It bothers me too much if I were to listen to music. I need pretty much silence to be able to concentrate enough to actually retain information. I guess classical music wouldn't bother me too much, but I rarely listen to that so I think its unlikely I would listen to it. I actually have heard about classical music being good for brain stimulation, so maybe I should start listening to it!

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

I can only listen to instrumental music while I study. If it is not instrumental music I find myself singing to songs, rapping, dancing, etc. High energy instrumental music is energizing to me. It increases my motivation and lowers my anxiety.

Re: Can you listen to music while you study?

    Hi Emma,

I typically watch TV shows instead of music just because I like to watch TV. Before I had access to almost infinite TV, I would listen to film scores on Pandora as I did my homework. Sometimes I would listen to comedians on Pandora while I did homework, but now it is just TV for me.
