Overall it seems that people want everything and if we had access to get
those things we would. I see so many people dependent on so many items.
And for some people they could not go days without it and most of these
people without this item find themselves blank looking for something
else. There are so many occasions where I wish people would start making
more personal sacrifice; we have been consuming far too many resources.
And have become so dependent on materials to provide happinesses that we
end up hurting ourselves and our environment when we don't have them.
Society has set so many standards on what is beautiful and on what is
cool and whatever the hell it has set. I know our economy depends on
goods but everyone has become too materialistic. And so I ask you, how
materialistic are you? Are there any personal sacrifices that you do
that go unheard? Is there anything you could not live without? And what
are your thoughts on those you see so attached to something?
As for me, I can live without a lot of things. I always thought it was
because the living conditions I grew up in. My brother and I have shared
rooms our whole lives in a small space and we didn't get what we wanted
not because of income but because of my family spending money on
worthless junk. My mum bought everything at thrift stores, and to be
honest my house was one of those "clean house" houses. So
majority of the time me and my brother grew up only getting what was
needed; we never could never fit anything "extra" in.
I never fell into those sales bull or the peer pressure to have
something because I knew that I never needed it. I could live without
TV, Internet, phones, music, brand clothing, bed(thats because i like
sleeping on the floor :]), heck and on an extreme occasion electricity.
Sadly though, I could probably never part with my car; it has brought me
so much liberation. Heck I bought it myself; it may not look the part
but it does the job. Now The only thing now that I find myself buying
are books; I love its knowledge you never lose; and seeing how the world
is now, knowledge is scarce.
Seeing everyone become so consumed in there goods (I guess thats why
they call them consumers) saddens me. If you don't agree with me sorry
as I am just writings thoughts now. Our whole lives we work for these
things; i am sure we need food, shelter, and clothing, but are the
benefits greater than the costs of working? I mean how much do we really have?
