HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
There is gotta be something that you have done that you went to church, confessed your sin and after that, you did it again! I just wonder if anybody knows a biblical citation that says how many times a sin can be forgiven. I mean, you know you did wrong, go to church, confess it and do it again, seems to me like you did not care about the advice given or the fact that you were forgiven by your priest, pastor, leader, etc.

I know I am one of the people above, and that is why I ask you this question. Sometimes for example, say you get mad at your friend and you insulted him, then you go and confess it and you are forgiven. Then, next week, something happen, and you did it again. Are there any boundaries for our creator to forgive us more than one time?

Say for example, a gay person who lives with the guilt of being gay, and does something wrong and goes to church to confess it, and he is told he is forgiven but he has to stop doing that, but he does it again because he cannot help it. What would your advice be in this one?

Personally, before when I used to go to church, I used to commit the same mistake over again, and it got to a point that I felt uncomfortable going to church to be forgiven because maybe the priest will listen from me the same sin over again. I guess this is one of the reasons also, I decided to stop going to any church and create my own which is to have a personal communication with God, and feel guilty with my head down pretending I am confessing personally with him, do you think this work? Do you think I will deserve salvation or I am hallucinating things that do not exist?

Share your comments with me please…

I've been confused by God's way many times in my life, and I probably will many more times. He understands though, He will never leave us, never stop loving us, and never stop forgiving us. No matter what you do, I'm sure he will help you to understand and will be there for you to talk to.

MATTHEW 12: 31 “On this account I say to YOU, Every sort of sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the spirit will not be forgiven. 32 For example, whoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the holy spirit, it will not be forgiven him, no, not in this system of things nor in that to come. (WE WERE BORN IN SIN, GOD WANTS US TO DO OUR BEST)

MATTHEW 18 : 21 Then Peter came up and said to him: “Lord, how many times is my brother to sin against me and am I to forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him: “I say to you, not, Up to seven times, but, Up to seventy-seven times. (INDICATING UNLIMITED FORGIVENESS)

MATTHEW 23: 6 They like the most prominent place at evening meals and the front seats in the synagogues, 7 and the greetings in the marketplaces and to be called Rabbi by men. 8 But YOU, do not YOU be called Rabbi, for one is YOUR teacher, whereas all YOU are brothers. 9 Moreover, do not call anyone YOUR father on earth, for one is YOUR Father, the heavenly One (CONFESSION TO A HUMAN IS A MAN-MADE TRADITION, NOT A BIBLE TEACHING)

Wow commander in chief, your post to my forum is awesome. I like it, so pretty much, a holly sin will not be forgiven, and a human sin will be, is that right?

And we have unlimited forgiveness, and the confession to a human is not really forgiveness if not is a human man made, wow, wow, wow, I did not know this!

How do you know all of this? Where do you get your wisdom? Those are really good answers.

Demonslayers, also thanks you very much for your words, I like when you say, he will never stop loving us, that is so true!

Thank you guys.

I agree with ya'll! God died for us, to wash us "white as snow" no matter how many times we sin, we will always be forgiven. commander in cheif's verses summed up that! i thought i would share a story i heard tho!

A bother and a sister were always fighting. It seemed like the brother was always doing something wrong! The sister finally said to him well, I'll give you 100 more times to mess up, but after that I'm never talking to you again! A week later the sister crossed off the 100th check. She started crying, she didn't want to stop talking to her brother. She loved him despite all his mistakes.

God loves us no matter what. If he didn't he would not have died for us. Whats the point in his crusifiction if there was a maximum on the number of times you could mess up?

Colossians 2:13-14 says, "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross."

Hebrews 10:17 "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."

there's no number...

God knows the heart. He will always forgive us, however, when we constantly repeat the same sin knowing we are sinning...then we aren't conscious anymore of the forgiveness of God...We're just ignoring Him.

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
God will always forgive us, but repentance is all about TURNING AROUND and NOT doing it anymore, so if you ask for forgiveness with no intention to change what you're doing, then you're missing the point completly. You must CHANGE!! That's what it's all about. and remember, you can't trick God. he knows your heart.

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
hmmm... I think it all depends on the person. A sin can be forgiven as many times as the forgiver is willing to forgive it. If someone keeps committing the same sin against you, it gets harder and harder to forgive it, however, it doesn't mean that it can't be forgiven. So it all depends on the "victim" if you will and how strong they are that determines how many times a sin can be forgiven.

Well, I don't really know if I necessarily believe in God, but I definitely believe in forgiveness. I think that anyone can be truly regretful, and that people deserve second chances.

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
We all are given a second chance, but we have a certain points that enough is enough. Like God said, when the lady ask for forgiven He said that go and sin no more. And for those who pray and confess to human, they can't clean your soul or forgive you only GOD can. So, no matter where you at whether in the bathroom or in your office you feel like praying then pray straight to HIM. Treat him like He is your friend that you can talk to at any given time.

Yvo, (I've changed my screen name again), but I am responding to your response to me.

It's not my wisdom. It's God's:

HEBREWS 4: 12 For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and [their] marrow, and [is] able to discern thoughts and intentions of [the] heart

The Scriptures are there and there are only X amount of them. Men ( inspired by God's enemy ) have perpetuated traditions (Confession, Christmas, etc.) without ever questioning the source, or actually investigating the scriptures.

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
God knew before He created the world every sin that each of us would commit. In fact, He chose us before the world even began (Ephesians 1:1-6). The truth is you are going to sin as many times as your human will desires you to. God already knew about it. So when Jesus died on the cross and the "sins of the world were on his shoulders" (John 1:29) Every sin past, present, and future had been covered by His death and ressurection. That's why Jesus says in Matthew 18:21-35 that we should forgive eachother seven times seventy. He was trying to indicate that it should be so many times that our forgiveness is unlimited. I was talking about this with some of my friends the other day. If God was merciful enough to forgive us for all the crap we've done and He's perfect, then how dare we as the guilty sinners we are hold back forgiveness from someone else. God tells us specifically that if we son't forgive others, He won't forgive us. (Matthew 6:14-15) So yes, apolygize and admit to your sin, the forgivess is there waiting for you always. But do not hold back forgiveness from anyone else, it'll just turn to bitterness. And bitterness is nothing you want in your life. Put it away from you.(Ephesians 4:31-32)

God Bless,
Lindsey

I agree with Cheerldr08. According the to "The Parable of the Prodigal Son" you have to confess your sins, but you really have to MEAN it, which means you can't just turn around the next day, week, month, year, etc, and do it again not if you really want forgiveness from God.

I think a sin can't be forgiven everytime. There are some situations that is really hard to forgive. (Killing people...)But some people think that to forgive somebody is weakness. Personally, I don't think so. It is a big gift to a person that you're forgiving. It means you're generous.

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
There have been a lot of really good posts so far in this forum. I agree with you cheerldr08 and reddevil when you say that you really have to mean it when you confess your sins. Sometimes though we make the same mistakes over and over again. We are continually tempted to sin because we are human. We really have to try to control our impulses and follow God's word.

He is always there to forgive us but we also have to repay him for his kindness by trying hard to follow his word. He will always be there to forgive us, if we truly as him to from the bottom of our hearts, but we cannot and should not abuse our relationship with Him.

Ands prop for posting all those bible passages Deejay JaDe!

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
People sin everyday, its something that seems almost impossinble to avoid. i know that i lied about the truth not to hurt the other person for whatever reason. but in the bible says that god will for give anyone and everyone who repents to him. its just like the story when jesus is hanged on the cross, on one side of him was someone who mocking him for being jesus christ. and was laughing at him. and on the other side was someone who was a theft i believe and asked god for his forgiviness. in which god did. god will forgive anyone who whatever sins that a person has done in there life. but only if they believe in him a repent.

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
God will forgive us every time we ask for His forgiveness, but our job as Christians is to repent.

If we truly believe God will forgive us and help us to stay away from the sin and close our ears to the enemy then we will be able to repent. But we really have to believe and have faith that God can change us. If we don't, and we merely ask for forgiveness but believe we will do it again, then we are not doing our part. Yes, we are human and probably will do it again, but we still have to believe that God can change us, and ask for help when we are posed with the situation again.

I agree with JaDe. JaDe pretty much summed up your question. I also agree with cheerldr08. Repentance is turning away from it. God can change us.God knows your heart. There are no limits on forgiving someone because God doesn't give you limits.

But the Bible also says in Revelation 3:15-16, "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth."

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
Confessions are for the Catholic church, right? I suppose if you are going to church confessions seeking forgiveness from the preacher you're confessing to, then your sins will only be forgiven by him as many times as he chooses to forgive you of your sins.

Now if you take your sins to God, and you truly are sorry, and you do try to make things right, then God will forgive you as many times as you come to Him for forgiveness. I believe it is written in the Bible that all sins can be forgiven.

Now, if you commit the unpardonable sin, you probably wouldn't really be seeking true forgiveness, because the unpardonable sin is to do as the devil did and get so involved in your sin and keep sinning over and over again that you stop feeling guilty or you stop wanting to repent of your sins, and you become comfortable with your sin. If you do commit that sin, then you're not likely to keep seeking forgiveness of it.

So long as you are alive, seeking forgiveness, and making an effort to change, God will forgive you, so long as you go to Him in Jesus's name.

Re: HOW MANY TIMES CAN A SIN BE FORGIVEN?
Maybe you can only be forgiven once, when you really mean it. If you really mean it then you won't do it again right? Perhaps everytime you ask for forgivness and still continue on the same path you asked more out of guilt of what others thought than actually thinking you did something wrong. When you truly hit a wall and are sorry for something because of the effect it had on you or others, I believe you won't do it again.
