Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I don't know about you guys, but my favorite part of getting Chinese food is getting the fortune cookie! I get anxious whenever I open them up, as I wonder what my new fortune for the day is. I happen to find a few of my fortunes lying around yesterday and decided to store them in a container for safekeeping.
Here's what a few of mine said:
"Important associates will be there for you, if needed"
"You will be recognized and honored as a community leader." - my favorite
    "You are admired by many"
"You shall attain great wisdom with each passing year"
When I decided to look up why fortune cookies were invented, I found out that it was an American invention that originated in California.

I was wondering if anyone else felt the same amount of anxiety and joy from receiving fortunes. Do you believe or have high hopes that your fortune is true? Do you believe that it may hold some prophetic value or that it's so general that it must be true? What was your most memorable fortune?

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I love fortune cookies! Any time I go to a Chinese food restaurant I will always take a handful just because I like to read them. You never really know what kind of fortune you are going to get. Sometimes you will get a legit fortune that seems like someone put actual thought in to writing. Other times you will get something silly that makes you laugh. The surprise of it is the best part :)

I do not necessarily think fortune cookies hold prophetic value, but in some cases the fortunes may be true. Personally, I just enjoy reading them.

One of the most memorable fortune cookies I have had just said "buy the new car." It made me laugh!

Whenever I open a fortune cookie I always joking recite the fortune from the movie Freaky Friday : "If what you see is what you lack then selfless love will change you back." :)

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I don't belive in fortune cookies at all, but i think they are clever
And if i could make my own fortune cookies, i'd put things like: there is someone following you or sleep with the light on tonight. lol something that would just freak the person out.

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I love fortune cookies. I just can never wait to open the wrap and I always wish that the Chinese people always put a lot in the delivery bag. I don't believe in them like the numbers but in the sayings, I think they are true. OMG I just found one in my cabinet. It says "If you're happy, you're successful" which is not necessary true". If you work hard and do your best in everything and stay positive then you will succeed. And about the lucky numbers, I always wanted to try them for the Lottery(mega millions or so).Great forum!!!!

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I love fortune cookies!! They crack me up. Some of them are so random that they don't make any sense. It's like someone took a paragraph out of a book and chopped up sentences to use. For example: The mountain will bow before you. What does that even mean?

My favorite one ever (that I still have in my room) is: "Catch on fire with enthusiasm and people will come for miles to see you burn." I thought that was cool

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I really like the idea of fortune cookies and seeing if the things that are said come true. I feel that they can be general so depending on what you do they would be correct. I don't feel they hold prophetic values but some do have lottery numbers on the back of them (ha!). I love to mix the cookies around and hand them to each person at the table. I've never had a fortune cookie that made me laugh and I don't remember what they said either. I know one talked about success and I know I'm going to be successful (already am).

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I love eating fortune cookies. I tend to just discard the fortune for my dad or brother to read later. I love the taste and the cracking them in two.

I don't believe in the fortunes. It is just like tarot reading or visiting a psychic. It's all fake in my opinion.

I think the sayings are uplifting from time to time, but I don't go around waiting for them to come true. I read them, internalize them, and move on with my day.

My dad loves the lucky numbers on the back of the fortunes. He plays the lotto all the time and he will use those numbers from time to time. I tell him to stick with the same numbers, but he never listens.

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

Fortune Cookies are awesome! I always looked forward to them as a kid. They were an incentive to finish my food. However I think they are just that...an incentive. While they may taste good and it may be fun to play around and believe that they are predicting your future, one must be realistic and come to terms with the fact that they arent doing anything besides adding a little bit of excitement at the end of your meal.

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I absolutely don't believe in fortune cookies, for the sole reason that I have in my posession a box of "evil" fortune cookies. Every one of them says something mean, like "you will die alone and poorly dressed" or "people only listen to be polite, but nobody cares what you have to say". They're quite funny if you want to punk a friend at PF Changs, but are also completely innacurate. I am always well dressed for example (not really).

They're fun, even if the cookie is stale you still have your fortune, but yeah in short there's no way the things predict the future. Ambiguity is the law!

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I love fortune cookies because they are yummy, but definitely don't believe them. They are more fun if you add, "in bed" after reading the fortune on the paper (I didn't see anyone mention this above, so sorry if I just over looked it).

The best fortune I ever saw was one my husband received. It said, "Fortune not found. Abort! Retry! Ignore!" He thought it was so funny that he kept it.

Interesting fact: fortune cookies are not Chinese. All of the Chinese people I know dislike them and think they are too sweet.

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I don't necessarily believe they are going to come true, but I do get excited every time I look at the fortune! :) I think they change your attitude for the better and make you hopeful, and that's what makes your fortune come true!

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

I've heard fortune cookies referred to as "statement" cookies because sometimes you just get a statement like "you are loved by many for your enthusiasm". That's not a fortune to me. I remember when I first started playing the lottery (some of you weren't even born back then...te he) I used to say if these fortune cookie people want to help me out, they should print 6 numbers on these. It took a while, but now you hardly see a fortune without numbers on it. Yes, I have played them a few times. I'm still on Collegenet, so obviously those numbers haven't won me much money.

I like fortune cookies, but you have to be careful how you eat them. They can scrape the roof of your mouth like those hard ass kettle chips.

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

Fortune cookies do not mean anything.

The "fortunes" are just too generalized. They are practically inevitable situations and subjective characteristics.

Re: Do You Believe In Fortune Cookies?

Thanks guys for all of your insightful answers to my questions. It's intriguing to know that many get the same excitement from reading fortunes. It's also crazy to hear about evil fortune cookies, I would love to play a prank on a friend or two with that.

Statement cookies does sound very fitting, as most of the time it will be more of a vague description more than anything.

I have yet to find anyone who really believe that fortune cookies hold any prophetic truth to them, besides the vagueness.
