Senator Biden: Make College Affordable
For those who don't know, Senator Joe Biden is a Democratic presidential candidate. During the first presidential debates, he received lots of good reviews and did exceptionally well. So I checked this guy out and what his positions are and I found this article:

Sen. Joe Biden today outlined the details of his plan to make college affordable by creating the College ACCESS credit, a $3,000 refundable tax credit for families making up to $166,000 a year.

"The responsibility lies with America's leaders to establish new policies that will enable the restoration of the middle class..."

Building on his long record of supporting substantial tax incentives to help low and middle class families, Biden's College ACCESS credit would cover the average cost of tuition at a public two-year college and would cover approximately half of the average cost of tuition at a public four-year college by:

Consolidating two existing tax incentives – the Hope Scholarship Credit and the tuition and fees deduction – and replacing them with a single $3,000 refundable tax credit that is the equivalent of a $12,000 deduction.

Expanding income limits so that most families are eligible for the tax credit and making it refundable so that families of all income backgrounds get the same benefit.

Simplifying the existing higher education tax incentives to make it easier for families to understand and navigate the maze of incentives.

Additionally, the Biden College ACCESS Plan would increase the maximum Pell Grant to $5,100 immediately, followed by increases of $300 per year for the next five years. And, the Biden plan will begin the conversation with students earlier by committing Pell Grants to students in the 8th grade.

"Last year, 400,000 young men and women got into college but were unable to go because their families could not afford it. Unless America changes course, it is estimated that over the next decade 2 million college-ready students are in danger of not attending college because they can't afford it... I believe my plan provides the measures by which to make a college education a reality for all students, no matter what their economic means are."

so what do you all think about his plan? I know the other candidates have plans as well, but this one stood out to me especially because it proposed 2 years free and since we all are on here for this reason, I thought I'd share.

That would be nice because we all know college definitely ain't cheap. If they would go through on that, that would make me a happy person.

Re: Senator Biden: Make College Affordable
You know what I want: free college for everyone! I want the federal government to step up and let ANYONE go to college that wants to. I think it would be a step in the right direction of raising the education levels of the US...

BUT, where would this money come from? Pots of gold left behind by random leprechauns? Tooth Faeries (Teeth Faeries?) slipping it in the government's coffers (a lot of congressmen are old enough to no longer have teeth, after all). No, that's right. It comes from taxes. Well, there's nothing wrong with raising taxes again is there?

It comes down to this. Everyone wants free stuff from the government, but no one wants to pay for it. They want the safety of policemen and firemen, but when they hear that they might have a 1% tax increase they scream "Why don't you make someone else pay for it? I need my money so that I can make endless text messages to American Idol!"

Maybe i'll vote democrat because i like the sound of this guy. Anyways, it would raise taxes, and i don't know how feasible this plan is because our country is already trillions in debt and getting deeper and deeper every day.

My question is this, how would this impact non-traditional students? Most qualifications for grants and scholarships are based on the simple formula of how much you make. However, most non-traditional students have responsibilities and overhead. For example, an adult may make $60,000 a year, which comes to about $5,000 a month, however the same adult may have $3500 in bills.
Perhaps not only do they need to evaluate funding, but qualifying formulas

When it comes to economics, I admit, I don't know much besides the very basics. I also thought that this plan would mean an increase in taxes, but the plan is to increase tax deduction on tuition payments and to expand the Pell grants to cover average tuition. If this plan really turns out to be as good as it seems, then that's wonderful.

The Plan Sounds like a good plan. But what I don't understand is where this country gets the false idea that it's the parents responsibility to pay for their childrens college education. The excuse for not going college because of not being able to afford it is a lame excuse. (with the exception of students who have children). within the last two years, I have been going to school, I have financed and payed off a 6K car loan, completely paid for all my tuition and books, Have been paying my own rent and my own food, and been paying for a pretty good social life. Guess how much of that money came from Mom and Dad? ZERO! And no, I havent had scholarships or grants. It all came from working full and over time. My grades are not good enough for a scholarship, and I can't get a grant because the government thinks mommy and daddy puts up $24,000 annually towards my schooling based on the facts that I'm not 24, I'm not married, and both my parents are still alive.
The only way I will actually like this new idea is if the government stops looking at how much the parents make, and start looking at how much the student makes. Because as of right now, all of the students I personally know, are receiving zero help financially from mommy and daddy.
But all in all, the excuse of "I can't afford college" is a lame excuse. You can always work while going to school, and if you're too lazy to work, take out student loans. but lets not start demanding the government to pay for our tuition because we don't want to. Remember the words of JFK: "ask not what your country can do for you, but ask, what you can do for your country."
