What's the definition of a mature person?
What is the definition of a mature person? What makes a person an "adult" and no longer a child....intellectually?

A "mature" person usually does not have a self centered point of view, usually thinks of others, and takes things in stride. In terms of real world issues: pays bills on time, does their taxes, etc. Just generally responsible.

A mature person is a person that is able to understand that are to learn a positive lesson from obstacles (whether good or bad ones), and is also a person that is no longer young-minded when it comes to life. However, of course we all slip up and have our immature moments.

A mature person is someone who takes life seriously. Someone who looks ahead into the future and makes wise decisions in life based on that. A mature person knows that one mistake in life may ruin his future and possibly have an effect on his childrens lives.
A mature person can contain his emotions. He does not let anger seep through.
A mature person is oftentimes busy- working towards a goal in life.
This is how I view mature people.

Some one who knows and can control him or her self. Very few people are mature, I think.

Re: What's the definition of a mature person?
A mature person is a person who knows he or she wants in life. A person who follows one single direction with a certain security that it will work. A mature person is a combination of everything. Emotionally, psychologically, financially, sociologically and personally stable.

A mature person intellectually is someone who knows how to take decisions in life, rather than using emotions, using rationality which means takes decisions based on reason. Intelect also comes with knowledge, and knowledge is acquired through education, so a person mature intellectually will be a person who has a certain amount of knowledge that together reasoning knows what to do, say or think.

Re: What's the definition of a mature person?
I'm not sure what makes a person "mature" really...

If it's when you start to measure up to some arbitrary artificially imposed societal yardstick that tells you that you can't have fun any more, because you have to take life seriously now, then I want no part of that. You guys have fun being "mature"...

I watched that movie "You, Me, and Dupree", and I really got the idea that most of what made Owen Wilson's character "uncool" according to the couple was that he is young at heart, still having fun, and leads with his heart over his head. Really wierd to me to see those qualities as being somehow "immature". In fact, those are exactly the qualities that, at least to me, make life fun and interesting, and worth living.

I guess I know what you're asking in the question, but I don't like the train of thought that says "taking life seriously" = "maturity". It looks that way on the surface, sure, but as one of my friends says:

"One day, you'll sit on your deathbed, and look back over your life. When you do, you'll want to have more "I wish I hadn'ts" than "I wish I hads"..."

I am not sure but I would say the definition of a mature person is a person that is not impulsive and is deliberate in making all his/her decisions, carrying a careful analysis of the consequences that will result from his/her decisions.

My immediate response would be someone who doesn't have to chuckle at every trivial thing they hear that could possibly be taken a different way.

I would say a mature person should have the ability to think for him or herself and be responsible in every way.

I think a big part of maturity is humility. No one's perfect. We all make mistakes and will continue to make them for the rest of our lives. We'll all screw up and do stupid things and say stupid things, but I think what makes you mature and more of an "adult" is being able to learn from your mistakes and missteps and be a person of your word.

Re: What's the definition of a mature person?
The word "maturity" does not have one single meaning. For most people their response would be "responsibility," Now, that is not incorrect, but that is not the whole sense of the word.
Being mature means not taking life seriously. There is nothing that says being mature means no fun in life. In life you can have the best of both worlds, and to me, that is what being mature is; finding a balance in one's life--a balance of silly and serious.
Being a "mature" person also means learning from any mistakes that have been made.
And most importantly, being mature is finding and having the strength to move on and ahead in the face of despair.
