Do you still watch cartoons?

Yeah I'll admit it! I think some cartoons and animated shows are super cool. And while I can go on about the classics like Scooby Doo and Doug from back in the day, there is much more to the genre than you might guess.

I must have gone from watching...Rugrats and Hey Arnold as a kid to stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell now. There are plenty of others, but I can't go listing ALL the animated shows that are cool can I? The style and story and feel of the shows I enjoy have changed dramatically over the years of course, but the one shared characteristic is that they always were drawn/rendered and a real person was never filmed. Cartoons and animation is a great genre!

I think it suffers though from the same stigma that can accompany say...comic books, of which I have never read, but still. People think of comics and go "Ha! Comics? Please those are for kids" when there's a huge culture of adults who love comics books and enjoy awesome stories told with some of the better hand done art of the day. It's a very refined and adult form of entertainment. Even if plenty of stuff for kids still exists. Same for cartoons! So do you like animation at all? Do you watch any cartoons, or anime, or machinima? Is this a style of entertainment you partake in...or is it something that's just not for you?

Favorite show? Favorite style? Favorite cartoon as a kid?

Besides, I know you all like the Toy Story saga, who doesn't? Animated! That's right I lawyered you!

Do you feel like you're aging?

The other day I was working with a co-worker. Instead of pulling up a chair I sat my laptop on top of his desk and knelt beside it. Now I grew up in a very Catholic family, my sisters and I went to church twice a week wether it was Lent, Christmas, or Ordinary Time, if you throw in the Holy days that's a lot of kneeling!

I never knew why older people would complain about the pain they felt in thier knees from kneeling. I understood they where older, but the pain of aging isn't something you know until you feel it. As I got up from working with my coworker I felt a sharp pain from placing too much pressure on my knees. Then I realized, I'm now on the long road to aging.

My body isn't as flexible as it once was. I can't eat anything I want whenever I want. My body makes mysterious cracks and pops every now and then. I found a wrinkle on my forehead. I have cellulite on the back of my thighs!

Even more so, I no longer enjoy going out and drinking as much as I once did. I don't have that naive, fearless, gusto. I now have a full blown conscience, that comes with worries and consequences. There's days when I look back to 3 or 4 years ago and I remember how passionate I was, the passion that comes with an uncertain future. As much as I love my stable lifestyle, sometimes I miss the days of being a wild child.

Can you tell that you're aging?

What are things you did when you where younger that you'd never do now?

What do you miss about being younger?

... for the week?

This begs the question that the forum is really about: do you plan your meals on a daily, or weekly basis?

I guess what I'm trying to get at is whether or not you're an overly organised person, or if you're extremely 'go with the flow' - as in "I never know what I'm going to eat until I see it".

My dad and my mom are opposites in this regard, as are my brother and I. I tend to think more like my dad on the matter, and my brother and my mom are closer in attitude. I'm a very organised person, and my dad and I sat down yesterday and talked about what we would eat for what day of the week. We were planning on sauteeing some vegetables in soy sause and scrambling an egg with it - that was my portion of the dinner, the rest of the family would eat stir fry (I don't eat meat).

Well, my dad got home today, and said 'change of plans'. I'm whipping up some spaghetti today because I don't have time for anything else, nor do we have ingredients. Now, being the schedule-oriented person I am, I chose not to eat with the family, and after this post, am walking to the grocery store, purchasing the ingredients, coming back home and making myself dinner. The only reason it mattered so much today was because I had other plans riding on what was being made. I was going to take the left-overs to work, meaning I would eat a more starchy dinner the next night.

So, do you guys plan your eating habits? Is it a bigger deal to plan when you're serving more people? Are you one way if you're just eating by yourself and another way when people are dependent on you?

Speak up!

Why are little girls clothes so much skimpier than boys clothes?

So I've gotten out summer clothes for my kids and have noticed a huge difference in the length of shorts for girls vs. boys. My son's shorts, which are size 4, have about a 5 inch inseam. Most of my daughters shorts, which are size 6, have about a 2 to 3 inch inseam and it is almost impossible to find longer shorts for her.

It is no just shorts that are a problem, if you go to your local department store, you'll find that a lot of what is sold for little girls is really skimpy and even sexy. I think this is really disturbing and do my best to dress my daughter modestly. Now, she mostly wears skirts an dresses, so her shorts are worn underneath so she doesn't flash her underpants when she is playing. I can foresee battles in the future as she gets older and wants to dress like her friends.

Have you noticed that clothing for little girls is skimpier than clothing for boys? What does this say about how our society views girls?

Any other thoughts?

If there is a god, why should we worship him?

Think of a 'god'--an omnipotent, all-powerful, personal god; one who created the universe and also takes the time to intervene in the affairs of his creations. His exploits and teachings have been written down in an ancient text--some wonderful, some horrific. Now, let's take his existence as a fact--there is no doubt, no room for debate. This god exists, and the written account of everything he has done is real as well.

Do you worship him?

One of the stories from the Bible that stuck with me was that of Abraham being asked to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, because it was what God had commanded. And I couldn't help but think how much better of a story that would have been if Abraham would have gone against the will of an all-powerful god to save his son. What a testament to love that would be.

If there is a supreme creator out there, would you worship him unconditionally? What if he was not entirely benevolent (not evil, necessarily, but flawed)? What if some of his laws contradicted your own moral code? Does his role as the creator give him the right to demand worship? If there is a god, why should we worship him?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Social Politics, that is.

It is summer, many of us ladies are excited to bring out our sundresses. Many guys are going to lose their ability to think and decide that it is cool to "holla" at women. Guys get cat-calls too.

Let's share!

What are some of your favorite random pick up lines from strangers you have experienced or just heard somewhere?

For the feminists, I realize underneath this whole topic is a subtext of objectification and harassment of women. We can talk about that if you want, but I am just looking for a few good laughs.

Any good lines, guys? Ladies?

With summer here and people taking vacations, I'm curious when you travel if you only travel with a carry-on bag. Do you try to pack lightly so that you don't have to carry any luggage under the plane? Do you have a hard time packing lightly, and have to take several suitcases? Has an airline ever lost your luggage?

There are a lot of us here on CollegeNET and there's a lot of people who come and go on a day to day basis. Because of this, there are bound to be repeat forum topics, sometimes in a relatively short amount of time. Sometimes, no one really says anything. How do you feel about repeat forum topics? What actions, if any, do you take?

There is always something. I know you would straighten out your teeth, your nose or fix you condescending tone. You wish you could change your voice, your jaw structure or your hairline. These are all things I wish I could change about myself. I have actually made strides to change most of these things but there are still the ones I cannot change.

I got nose surgery but it was for my three times broken nose not for looks and I am looking into braces for straighter teeth, but more importantly I have been changing my tone, my condescending attitude, and my competitive behavior.

So maybe it's your heritage, or your family members, or maybe it's the problem you have with gambling or you spend too much time studying etc.

Pick something and expand on how you want to change yourself.

Is it possible to make this change?

Why don't all College Degrees pay equal money?

No matter what you study, college is HARD. I did 5 years of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science but this is not the only major which seems difficult. All majors require similar amount of hard work and every field is very challenging. It is not that engineers put so much work to succeed and Business majors or English majors get college degree with less effort.

I have seen my friends who did non-technical majors and worked equally or more to get good grades but the effort they put in was no less than what I put for my major. I am still struggling to find a job but relatively engineering degrees pay a little more than those majors my friend's studied.

We all spend so much money to get education and it is sad there are people who make very little despite having college degrees. I started to wonder why are some majors paid so much while some aren't paid enough.

Why there is no decent payment for all majors? Is it because of capitalism? Are all college degrees good enough to make decent amount of money? What's the reason some majors have such a high salary while some majors hardly make any money? People who does construction work, painting etc make more money even when they don't have a college degree but some majors are really dull in paying good amount of money. Does anybody know why? Would you pick a major based upon salary?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Why didn't we learn about this in history class?

I put this under world because even Europeans don't really learn about these two things that happened in world history. Indeed both affected the world in some way.

Thank you Alf for the subject of my forum today.

When Americans think about slavery in America, we only think about African slaves. However, the Irish were enslaved before and during the African slave trade (read about it here. Further more the many slaves in Europe and North America were Native Americans . The Irish slaves are often called "Indentured Servants" or ignored, and most history books only have 1-2 paragraphs about Native American history in America. I actually did know about the Irish and Native American slave trade. I made it a point to study my ethnic history. Since I am of Irish, English, Native American, German and Greek descent I wanted to know about my ancestors, their culture, their history. Much of what I discovered was bleak. A lt of it was also good. My grandmother refused to acknowledge her English ancestry. She considered herself Irish. Given how England treated the Irish I do not blame her. The Irish were killed, enslaved, and married women were raped by an English kings decree (I forget which one) in order to breed out the race. These things are not discussed in history class. Native Americans were treated just as badly, though from many different countries (Spain, France, England, and Holland primarily). Human history and ignorance does not surprise me. What does is our inability to discuss history honestly.

Why don't we learn about these two subjects in school? Do people think that not discussing them will somehow make the tainted history of England and America disappear?

We learn about English penal colonies, but we do not learn about the Irish slave trade. We also don't learn much about Native American history in general. I find Europeans know more about American history than we do, yet many of them do not learn about the Irish as slaves.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" - George Santayana

There is still a lot of racism in the U.S., is it possible that it is because we have forgotten our past?

What do you all think about the articles? Did you know about this part of history?

Living with my brother has been interesting. He really reminds me of my dad. There is one huge difference my dad did not argue. We have noticed that my brother loves to argue, about everything. TV shows, books, what color his shirt is, literally everything.

The thing is my sister and I do not argue, not really. I am a bigger arguer than my sister. But we do not argue. My mom really does not argue. We more just shut down, or go with the idea of lets agree to disagree.

So there are a couple of questions. Where does the tendency of arguing come from? Is it inborn or is it taught? Do you have someone in your life that just argues?
